OfflineI've been listening to the 1st Past Master's a lot lately. But mostly This Boy and Yes It Is. The three part harmonies on both of those songs are pretty epic and they're very emotional.

Non-Beatle songs: When the Levee Breaks and You Shook Me by Led Zeppelin; Helen Wheels and Wonderful Christmastime by Macca; Watching the Wheels and Happy X-Mas by John; Rock 'n' Roll Suicide by David Bowie; Kanye West's new album (it's actually really REALLY good); Gimme Shelter by the Stones

OfflineI'm on an "early songs" kick: "Please Please Me," "There's a Place," "It Won't Be Long," and "Not a Second Time." I especially love the line "I don't wanna sound complaining, but you know there's always rain in my heart." I love the mental image of rain in the heart. Also, I love his voice when he sings that.

I'm with you, M3. I often wonder what Please Please Me sounded like in its infancy à la Roy Orbison. I seem to remember
using words like "dreadful" to describe it, but I'd still like to hear it.

OfflineSkip to 2'47" here to hear George Martin talk about it, and sing a little in the Orbison style. I don't know if it had a Be My Baby beat when The Beatles originally played it, or it that was just a GM embellishment (I was in the front row at that event, a few chairs away from Paul McCartney!).

Yeah, Joe I remember your article on this and the fact that you got Sir George's autograph. And I do apologize to him – the word he used was "dreary", not my aforementioned "dreadful".
Too bad (or not) there is no recording of it floating around out there.
Thanks anyway for bringing up that video again. I could listen to him speak for hours.

OfflineI've been listening to the Anthology version of Cry Baby Cry a lot recently. I like his voice in that song, it's like sentimental with a touch of sadness, guilt and compassion all at the same time, which would make sense if he wrote it for Julian. Lots of Anthology 3.
Also the Acoustic version of God, the intro makes me smile. "I had a message, from above. And I'm here to tell you, this message concerns our love. The angels must have sent me to deliver this to you. Now here me now, brothers and sisters."

not a second time, no reply, you're gonna lose that girl and I'll be back – - oh my goodness – can the basic pop song get any better?
Right! you can put Can't Buy Me Love in that same category.

To me, Anthology is like Beatles A to Z…Naked
It's so cool to hear how the early takes varied from the finished product.

We agree on that – as much as love that tune – it doesn't stand up to these (although it's still a great tune).

I know what you mean Zig, especially on Anthology 3 it feels like seeing the Beatles naked, which I think I like better. Not that the incredible overdubs of '66/'67 weren't, well, incredible, but the simplicity of '68 is definitely turning into my favorite. It is the Beatles, it's four guys music on an album because George and Ringo would take up half of one side of any other album. Looks like they had it right.
