Welcome Constance!
These "ooohs" were their first trademark and you find them everywhere in their early songs. ["oooooh, She loves you yeah, yeah, yeah...," "oooh and I saw her standing there...."].
It wasn't just Paul: it was ALL of them – and they shook their heads (and hair) in unison.
It was an aural and visual thing.
Such were the "early" Beatles.
With the Help! album they began to transition away from that frenetic style.
Recently I have been getting back into their very early stuff, which some would consider primitive, and marveling at the rapidity and magnitude of their transformation within only a couple of years. "Love Me Do," for instance; I love that stately, charming beat, only two chords throughout the vocal harmonies, the only real deviation from the simple form being Paul's "yeaahhh, LOVE me do" in the middle… then also the early, raw energy of "Thank You Girl", "I Saw Her Standing There" and "From Me To You"… the beautiful moment in the middle of "I'll Get You" when John and Paul drop into harmony in the bridge.

OfflineWhat gets me about From Me To You is that on the second line of each verse Paul sings slightly different to John putting a bit of emphasis on the lines (if there's anything i can do; like a heart thats oh so true). Its those little things that the beatles would throw in whereas most bands would sing it straight.
Another example of that is in Drive My Car when Paul sings the line "she said listen babe, i got something to say" different to John. George Martin didnt realise until it was mentioned to him a while later.

OfflineYeah, I am really into the earlier songs and albums at the moment…and picking up new and different things to like about them. For all of their "oohs" they did some really great rock and roll screams…Paul's in "Can't Buy Me Love" and John's in "Hard Day's Night" are just two, but others they injected into live performances as well. Am loving the little live clips on youtube from various concerts and shows…lots of stuff out there to watch.
I am disappointed that the Lost Concert movie has been postponed from net week's premiere…hope the rights get worked out. But I think it is the Washington DC concert, which is mostly online, although not greatest quality.
Also learning to love "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" all over again, the playing on that is really great. Also George's solo on "I Saw Her Standing There' is fab, and I think Paul lets out a pretty good scream in that one too.
I watched "Living in the Material World" again last night and love the early Beatles footage…the clip of George watching a video of "This Boy" is touching and funny and even he admits that was a pretty good song.

OfflineI'm still on the oldies this week…today I am enjoying "Ask Me Why", "I'll Cry Instead" "Anna" and also "No Reply."
Speaking of stalker songs (I think we were…) "I'll Be Back" kinda sounds like he will be back, whether she likes it or not, lol (if you break my heart I'll go…but I''ll be back again..)

This is a mini-concert at the BBC from about late 1963/early 1964
Two things I had never heard them do before; one is a medley of their 1st five hits (Love Me Do, Please Please Me, She Loves You, I Wanna Hold Your Hand and From Me to You) and also, they close with "Shout" lead-sung by George. I had never come across the Beatles doing "Shout" before", was a nice surprise. Also it is a very clear video and sound. Can't stop watching/listening.

OfflineIts an itv special from April '64 called Around The Beatles; some of the master tracks pre audience are on anthology 1 in stereo whilst the mono soundtrack pre audience is out there on bootleg.
Shout is a fabulous rarity and the hits medley is pretty cool, i think its the only time they did one.

Yeah I really loved hearing "Shout" I guess technically George is not singing lead as they each take a section of the song, I got a little carried away by my George love…but I do love his part in it…

OfflineGeorges vocal is definately the hightlight, i love his "a little bit softer now" section and the band gets lower and lower. Its the only part where i would have been happy if it lasted double the length. Shout is unique in that it is the only Beatles song which has each beatle sing lead vocal independently of each other. Unfortunately the version on Anthology is edited so once again you have to go to the world of bootlegs.

Yeah, I love George's part too…his voice sounds great. Also love when Ringo does his bit, as it takes you by surprise. All in all, a good find for me…
Two of the engineers on that show (Around The Beatles) got in touch with each other through my site (they left comments on the page). It turned out one had a film copy with bad sound, whereas the other had a pristine soundtrack. They married them up and sent me a DVD of the result. It looks great

Me too Ben! I just listen to Please Please Me through Help! now! I like to hear what they sounded like before they had the orchestras and all that….

I can't stop listening to 'In My Life' at the moment. I just love that song so much. One of my favorite, lyrics are just so great, and that short guitar riff
, one of greatest songs of all time.
That bridge is one of the best moments in their entire discography.

OfflineI have been absolutely obsessed with "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" lately. And what's funny is I used to not be so fond of that song…obviously, I love it now! ![]()
