It's just wordplay and bits of stories that do go anywhere. "The dogs were dogging, the cats were catting, the birds were birding, the fish were fishing, them for themming and when for whimming" - that's one of my favourite bits.

One day, a tape-op got a tape on backwards, he went to play it, and it was all "Neeeradno-undowarrroom" and it was "Wow! Sounds Indian!" -- Paul McCartney

I'm not even sure "Revolution 9" can be considered a song.  It's more of a conceptual abstraction of abstract conceptualization.  Sorry.  Can't think of any way to describe it actually.

Anyway, I don't avoid it.  If I'm listening to White Album late at night, I'll lay down on the couch and listen to R9 with the room dark, eyes closed.  It really does evoke a strange atmosphere.

I grew up in a really small farm town that was pretty remote.  There weren't even many radio stations we could pick up in the 60s and 70s when I was growing up.  At night, most stations would amp their broadcast power down, so signals were iffy at best.  If you drove anywhere with the radio on, the signals would come in and out.  And that's exactly what Revolution 9 sounds like to me.  When the crowd chants "Block that kick!  Block that kick!" I drift back to my days of Friday night high school football.  It's almost a time machine for me.

So when I hear it at night, in the dark, it actually relaxes me.  And then when Ringo comes on, crooning "Good Night", I almost automatically slip away into dreamland...

The first few times I heard it, I would've been about 11, it freaked me out, I think I my have ran to my mom once or twice....  Now that I'm used to it, I'll listen to it voluntarily, and sometimes choose to listen to it for the quotes and various other spoken bits and interesting sounds.  For some reason, I particularly like how George says "eldorado".a-hard-days-night-george-9

I read somewhere that is considered "musique concrète".

Yeah, it's musique concrete, more or less.  To people used to pop music, it's so out there it breaks the defiition of music, but this kind of music has been around since the 1940s or so, and yes, it is music.

Hi mistabook! I know I can look this up myself, but I'd rather ask you - what defining characteristic does Revolution 9 share with say I've Just Seen a Face that makes them both music?

Ad hoc, ad loc, and quid pro quo! So little time! So much to know!

In some definitions, R9 isn't music, in others, it is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D.....n_of_music

You can not cover a sound collage.

I tried to think of something powerful and moving… and failed.  "You were given a choice between war and dishonor - you chose dishonor, and you shall have war" - Winston Churchill

True Von, But why would we want to uncover Rev. 9?

Call it what you will, but fun is not what I use to describe it.

In fact, Wikipedia states that there's at least four covers by Phish, Def FX, Little Fyodor and Alarm Will Sound.

They did.

They need to work the first part, they need a lower-pitch, soft voice for "number nine" part too. The last section is fine.

Forget what I said before. Phish are not taking this theme seriously.

Alarm Will Sound version kick serious ass!
