I agree. It's mediocre. It sounds like a song any band at that time could have written. As a Beatles song, it's not very strong.

As for the lyrics, well, if they don't bother another fan, fine. Whatever. Me, however, I know what it's like to have a crazy man threaten my life, so pardon me if I don't ...

I enjoy Run For Your Life! I agree with . I wouldn't say it's the worst song on Rubber Soul but John probably just saw it as an 'album filler'. Other songs I think which are perfectly rated are:

A Day In The Life

I've Just Seen A Face

All My Loving

I've Got A Feeling

Anyway i love the song and the fact that the lyrics are so dark, a step away from the regular beatle lyrics.

But I never thought of it as anything more than a fine end-of-an album Beatle song. Good little mid-Beatles years production - trite lyrics and all. (Didn't the Rolling Stones sing "Under My Thumb"? I don't hear any catcalls)

As to what "consensus" opinion is, that might be harder to guage. Everybody knows that "A Day In The Life" is universally praised and that "Mr. Moonlight" (which I like) is much-loathed, obviously. But in between those two, there can be surprises: Until I started posting here two years ago, I had no idea that so many people disliked "Run For Your Life" so strongly! I'd heard hundreds of songs with vaguely unpleasant ...

And what parameters do you go by? For example, does the impact of a song (on society, on the rest of the music world, on its reach throughout the world,...) matter? Or is that not relevant?

[you'll find my personal (ever-changing) list at http://bit.ly/uVIM6L but you'll surely disagree with half (as will everyone else); that's part of the fun]
