I don’t dislike Mr. Moonlight, I just don’t think it has a lot going for it and I find it rather boring (as with quite a few of their only covers). The only Beatles songs I dislike (would give below 5/10) would be;

Good Night
Honey Pie
Wild Honey Pie
A Taste Of Honey
Dig It
Maggie Mae
Rocky Raccoon

Everything else gets a 5/10 rating minimum.

5 Ringo tracks in amongst those @nzbeatlefan. a-hard-days-night-ringo-7

The only one i’d say was a surprise inclusion was ‘And I Love Her ‘, the rest would feature on many people’s lists for worst songs or at the lower reaches of individual album rankings.

ahdn_paul_06 I understand I Love Her a bit I used to not like it the first time I heard it because of the vocals but it grew on me

@meanmistermustard it’s a shame they quite often gave Ringo “throwaway” songs as I actually really like his voice! It’s more about the songs themselves. I enjoy I Wanna Be Your Man (made the top 100), With A Little Help From My Friends , Octopus’s Garden & Don’t Pass Me By .

2. Dear Prudence

Yep – some of you guessed it. But what a SONG! Admittedly the first few times I heard this one I was a little uncertain on whether it would become a favourite of mine. I always thought it was good, but not great. But on the 5th or so listen I realised how great this song is, and how unfairly overlooked it is by the general public (but I’ve seen a lot of people on this forum say how great it is!). Opening with the fading jet sounds of Back in the U.S.S.R., the song’s first 70% or so is backed by a sexy little riff played by John Lennon . Paul is on damn fine form here. He provides one of his best ever basslines and he kills it on the drums. It may be one of my favourite drum moments in the Beatles catalogue (sorry Ringo). George gets some nice lead work, it’s not over the top but on a song like this having a huge solo could make or break it.

My absolute favourite thing about the song is the lyrics. I mean, they’re so simple but so emotive. And it’s not even a love song! Well, depending on your meaning of love. It’s a song about trying to get someone to stop what they’re doing and explore outside but John threw in a few sneaky lines like “the sun up/the sky is blue/it’s beautiful/and so are you” which could be my favourite song line ever. Sneaky John. And to top it, his vocals on this are phenomenal. It’s one of those somewhat rare moments in their late years where John really goes all out and puts as much effort in as he did in 1964. Completely awesome. I wish I could write more about this, but I feel I can’t do it justice. So you are just gonna have to take my word when I say this is the best thing I have ever heard in my life (with the exception of #1 I guess!). This could easily be my #1. In some ways, I prefer this over my #1. But the next song was the one song that made me realise how amazing the Beatles truly are. I’m not going to give any clues away for the next song, if you want to make a huge guess go for it but it could be a huge surprise.

Next time you hear from me, I’ll be presenting my numero uno song and I’ll post the entire list as well.

Dear Prudence ‘ is a phenomenal track. The opening guitar pickings (better with a clean opening), John’s incredible enticing vocal (how could you not go out and play?), the bass work, the guitars. And i love Paul’s drumming. Yes its not Ringo but thats not a bad thing. It really works and suits the song especially when Paul goes all mental three minutes in, i can see him really loving doing that. Who knows what Ringo would have played, i doubt it would have been anything like that.

I learnt to play it with a dropped D a long time ago………..I’ve forgotten how it goes now. Your rating is sending me back for a listen and I’ll get the old guitar out too.

This thread of posts gets my vote for years best.

Just nipped over to youtube and found this bloke doing it all for us again.

Okay guys, it’s time.

Time for #1.

I don’t know how anything I could write could do this justice. This song is possibly the best thing I have ever heard in my entire life. It’s one of those songs that has many sections strung together like I’ve Got A Feeling , A Day In The Life and Happiness Is A Warm Gun . The song was recorded during the Abbey Road sessions and appeared on that album as the first song of the 16 minute medley. This song is over 4 minutes in its own right so I am on the fence if it’s properly in the medley or not.

The first section is pretty much Paul accompanied by… Paul on a piano. There is some nice bass in there and some little guitar flourishes from John and George. The second section is reminiscent of Lady Madonna and other Paul-on-a-piano-doing-rock-and-roll mumbo jumbo and is quite funny. The piano work is really cool by the way. The third section brings in John and George playing some nifty little notes before the song picks up and one of the greatest solos of all time starts. Listen to those guitars interact, it’s pure magic! The final section is the most upbeat and features the rhythm section from heaven. After that the coda is in place, with a line being repeated over and over while John and George fight with their axes again.

It’s hard to describe this song. This was the first song of the Beatles that made me go “wow, these guys are amazing”. I was aware of plenty of other songs, and I still loved them but this one was the first that got me hooked. I think every Beatle is on peak here, John has best guitar performance on tape, George’s solo is up there with his best, Paul’s vocals are astonishing, his bassline is perfect and his piano work is second to none. And good old Ringo provides one of his 5 greatest perfomances.

Ladies and gentlemen, my number one song;

You Never Give Me Your Money .

I Think that Rolling Stone should do a cover story of The Rolling Stones covering "Like a Rolling Stone" or if a Type of Beetle was named after The Beatles.

You have no idea how happy it makes me that YNGMYM is #1. It’s my favorite song, and so many people overlook it on their lists. To me it’s easily the greatest thing they ever did, a real masterpiece.

You mention it being John’s best guitar work; do you happen to know which parts are his so I know what to listen for?

Great list btw! It’s obvious how much thought was put into it.

Very fun reading through your list! I liked that you justified each choice, and the suspense was fun!

I’m inclined to make my own list now, but considering how indecisive I am, it could take years to compile. I might try anyway, it’ll give me an excuse to sit down and really listen to the entire Beatles catalogue straight through.

Great job, @nzbeatlefan!

A surprise #1 @nzbeatlefan but i get why it is for so many. And a great way to detail your favourite Beatle tracks, far more interesting and involving than a bare list of 100 songs with no information or reasons why. Thank you for taking the time to do so.

I couldn’t make a list as it would end up having to include BBC tracks and outtakes and be a top 250.

Thanks for your kind words everybody! It was actually really fun, and I enjoyed everyone’s comments and especially @meanmistermustard and their amazing detective work! It’s a different list, don’t know how many people would have Penny Lane , All You Need Is Love , Yesterday and Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds out of their top 100.
