I think it's explained somewhere in the Anthology documentary that he was nervouse because George Martin told him to sing the 'Love Me Do' end of the verse line because John was busy on the harmonica. At first John was trying to sing this line. I don't think Paul had time to get comfortable in the studio with George Martin yet.

It's interesting that Paul's vocal wobble is only in the Past Masters version. The Please Please Me one sounds fine. His confidence must have grown by the time they came to re-record it.
