Have you tried listening to the artists that inspired the Beatles? Chuck Berry, Roy Orbison, early Elvis, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, et al. I do that sometimes. Listen to the songs that put the fire in the Beatles. Sometimes I listen to Mozart. Actually the Beatles got me into classical music.

But no matter what I listen to, when I come back home to the Beatles, it's like, "Wow, this is great stuff"

Good luck

My biggest mistake regarding the Beach Boys was listening to one of their greatest hits cds years ago as i hate their early surfing crap - man i hope SDASN doesnt turn out to be in the same vein as Surfing USA.

That's my favourite era, since you mention it.

I think that a lot of the love comes from an emotional connection to the squandered potential of the post-'Pet Sounds' / pre-nostolgia-act era. There were loads of great songs, but they were sadly surrounded by lots of inept songwriting and half-assed production.

A big problem was that the Beach Boys themselves were not 'cool'. They were basically out-of-touch with pop culture after 1966, and the band struggled with Mike Love's corny 1950s values and half-baked TM mantras, Brian's leftover bits ...

Of course, if you really want to, you could listen to some music you don't like and then marvel at how wonderful the Beatles are; on a second thought, maybe not. As much as it aches me to admit it, there are lots of other great bands over there, some you might not have noticed yet, it doesn't take anything away from the Beatles to listen to something else for a change, really.

And yeah, it's not good to be obsessed over one thing, either. What I mean is, it's not just the music, it's the movies, ...

Their music is all fine and dandy to listen to at parties and various other social gatherings, but I've never had the desire to listen to them on my own. They just don't seem to reach that...musical standard of meaningfulness...I'm looking for, ya know? Not that I'm knocking The Beach Boys--I can certainly understand why people would enjoy their music--they're just not my cup of tea.

Like many other people on here have said, the best thing is to surround yourself with new artists/bands, and get some change of scenery, and then go back to the Beatles when you feel you're ready. The Beatles will sound as new to you as they did the first time you heard them, guarenteed.
do I need to listen to them all in order in one day...?

That was going to be my suggestion. On many occaisions I've started with "I Saw Her Standing There", singing (poorly) at the top of my lungs all the way up to "The End".

Another remedy is to create a playlist featuring songs from all the artisits you have and playing it on shuffle mode. When I do that, and a Beatles song comes up randomly, it really makes me smile.

Hope this helps!

After a few days, I reread the "Anthology" book and partly the book by Steve Turner (about the stories behind the songs) and, sure enough, I started listening to the music again with more passion. In fact there's enough Beatles-stuff to keep you busy for decades.
