So, no: I much prefer the album to end with, duh, “The End “, and I think “Her Majesty ” works so much better in its original placement, between “Mean Mr. Mustard” and “Polytheme Pam”. And that's the way I re-edited it as soon as I had the software to do so. (I also cross-faded the end of “…Bathroom Window” with the beginning of “Golden Slumbers “, but that's another story.) The whole thing's now one long 16-minute track on my computer; and when I want to hear that big medley, that's what I play instead of the CD.

(Only one minor problem I have with the “Mustard/Majesty/Pam” sequence: John's “His sister Pam…” no longer immediately preceding “Polytheme Pam” eliminates a tiny bit of thematic continuity. But at least “Mustard” also has a reference to the Queen, so following that with a song about “Her Majesty ” partially compensates for the “Pam” discontinuity.)

See, I can't really picture Her Majesty in between Mean Mr. Mustard and Polythene Pam .  I mean, I know it was the original running order and all, but Her Majesty is a mellower song than both Mean Mr. Mustard and Polythene Pam .  It seems like it would just sound out-of-place when put between the two.  This is just what I think, though.  I've never actually tried to put Her Majesty in between the two songs, so I can't really say.

Something I have to say about Paul’s ego or John’s ego.

I don’t think this was a bad thing. After all, it was a factor for making them Lennon/McCartney.

That’s why one of my favorite George songs is I, Me, Mine, because I can see George sitting, looking at these and says “Oh come on already, we know you’re f**king Lennon/McCartney. So what??” a-hard-days-night-george-10

If you have to say you're just kidding, why say it at all? And twice, for that matter?

There's a difference between sarcasm and “just kidding.” Both are saying something without really meaning it, but there's a difference. Sarcasm is when I say, “Boy, is my room clean.” “Just kidding” is when you say something potentially hurtful with or without thinking, and then decide to try to pass it all off with, “Oh, it was just a joke. Seriously, can't you take a joke?” When you're in a “just kidding” situation, why say anything at all? I find that I think less highly of those who use “just kidding” to get out of the consequences of dumb things they say. Don't mothers still repeat the trite but true “If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all” to their children?

If I seem to act unkind, it's only me, it's not my mind that is confusing things.

Personally I use sarcasm quite often and when someone doesn’t get the sarcasm and gets offended/insulted/hurt when I was making a joke with my sarcastic streak I use Just Kidding to tell them I didn’t mean to offend/insult/hurt that person. I do understand your point but it can be used alternatively.

The YEAH! needs to be longer, though.

Anyway, personally, I like the little added touch of Her Majesty being at the end of The End . It shows their less serious side (although you see that more often than their serious side, really)

Yes, I love the scene in Let It Be when the three of them play I, Me, Mine and George is like hidden in the darkness and singing the song while John and Yoko are dancing with each other. It’s pretty telling. They both had massive egos, but at least John admited it, Paul just would release an album with a press release of the Beatles breaking up and a few comments on how unbelievable his album is. Just kidding, or am I being sarcastic? Someone tell me!

I thought Her Majesty was a fun ending to The Beatles last recorded album. It was just like them to end their last album with a fun little diddy about “Her Majesty ” and that she's a nice girl. Very much reminds me of their humor and how they where.

I always thought of it as an encore. A little thing to end with to keep the fans wondering.

You don't even have Rock Band! You just stole that off YouTube.

I can play lots of songs on the Expert level on drums. 😀

I can do the three part harmonies on expert on my own.

You all will have read that Dave Dee is no longer with us. But Mickey and Titch and I would like to carry on the good work that's always gone down in number two.

Did I say “Hey that is ME playing the drums in Rock Band” ?

No I didn't. It was to show the irony of my comment.

And not having Rock Band doesn't mean I don't play it. My nephew sometimes spends weekends in my house, and he brings his Wii and all his Rockband set and we play.

The story was really sweet. He was playing guitar, I was playing drums. I felt a bit frustrated for not matching his expertise in playing rock band and not helping him to get stars or whatever bullshit you get for playing well, and he said “Hey I know a song you can play in expert!” and we played Her Majesty . We laughed a lot.

I love knowing about the happy accident that resulted in its inclusion on the album.

If you know about it being an accident, why your theory about it being Paul's egotrip??? Since I didn't have that impression nor would I ever come up with something like that it looks as if you're wrong about calling it “unavoidable”.

How
is it The Beatles' mistake that so many other artists copied this
accident?? They didn't try to be clever, they just liked it!

So I couldn't disagree more with your “rant”.

And btw, Abbey Road was far less Paul's project than Peppers. They ALL wanted to end it well and put all their effort in it and cooperated and re-recruted George Martin to do one more great album like in the old days.

It has George's best songs and Ringo's best song and my favourite John song (I want you) and, indeed, many great Paul songs. So it's EVERYONE at their peak.

Don't try to put down Macca all the time, if you please.

I wasn't putting Paul down at all. You misunderstood me. I said it was as if  Paul tried to upstage his bandmates. I said that I know it was an accident and that Paul didn't intend for “Her Majesty 's” placement to be some kind of ego trip. The fact that Paul (originally) intended to exclude “Her Majesty ” is like the OPPOSITE of egotism! When I said “unavoidable impression” I was referring to MYSELF, my impression that was unfortunately made unavoidable by future events. To claim that I'm blaming Paul for future events is as silly as claiming that I blame John for “Happiness Is A Warm Gun ” being a depressing reminder of his murder! (I don't think that way at all, btw, it's just an example.) I LIKE “Her Majesty “, I just happen to like it a lot more as a bridge between “Mean Mr. Mustard” and “Polythene Pam “, for a number of reasons which I explicitly explained. It's a minor complaint about song sequencing on a great, great album – a large part of which greatness is thanks to your hero, Paul McCartney . There's another thread where I complained in equal detail about another fantastic album (Rubber Soul ) which could've been even better if they'd chosen a different track as closer. I didn't blame anyone in particular there either.

As for all the other folks who released CDs with the long-silence-then-hidden-track thing (with their hidden tracks being much less enjoyable than “Her Majesty “, usually), they may have taken the idea from Abbey Road , or they may not have. It doesn't matter to me either way, I just have the same opinion: it's amusing the first time you play it, irritating ever after.

GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

If it's that big a deal to you that Her Majesty is right there, don't listen to it.

Well, like I said, I did something even better: re-edited the entire medley into a single 16-minute track with “HM” back in between “Mustard” and “Pam” – where I prefer it – and with “Bathroom Window” seguing into “Golden Slumbers ” rather than fading entirely.

For illustration, for anybody who wants to hear “Her Majesty ” with her two neighbours, just download this:
