OfflineI noticed that there was a thread for non-Beatles song lyrics, but not Beatles song lyrics, so naturally, I sprang into action!!
One of my favorites is Long Long Long:
It's been a long, long, long time,
How could I ever have lost you,
When I loved you?
It took a long, long, long time,
Now I'm so happy I found you,
How I love you,
So many tears I was searching,
So many tears I was wasting,
Oh, oh,
Now I can see you, be you,
How can I ever misplace you?
How I want you,
Oh, I love you,
You know that I need you,
Oh, I love you."
You can do a full song of amazing lyrics, like I did, or just do a section or a line that you like.
Enjoy!!!!!

Offline"Once there was a way, to get back homewards. Once there was a way to get back home; sleep pretty darling do not cry. And I will sing a lullaby. Golden Slumbers fill your eyes. Smiles awake you when you rise; sleep pretty darling do not cry. And I will sing a lullaby"
Golden Slumbers, 1969 (it was played during the get back sessionsin january 1969 so likely written in 1968)
The lyrics of the chorus are written by thomas dekker and slightly changed by mccartney, so is the end of the verses (which is the same as the end of the chorus). The lyrics of the verse's beginning (which are my favourite lyrics of the song) are written by mccartney allone

OfflineI have always loved the lyrics from ''Across The Universe'' – words are flowing out like endless rain into a papercup, they slither wildly as they slip away, across the universe. Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are driftig through my opened mind, possesing and caressing me. J'ai guru deva om….

Offline"Turn off your mind, relax and float down stream
It is not dying, it is not dying
Lay down all thoughts, surrender to the void
It is shining, it is shining
Yet you may see the meaning of within
It is being, it is being
Love is all and love is everyone
It is knowing, it is knowing
And ignorance and hate mourn the dead
It is believing, it is believing
But listen to the colour of your dreams
It is not leaving, it is not leaving
So play the game "Existence" to the end
Of the beginning, of the beginning."
I try to do the first line of this song every day of my life.

That's one of my favorites, too. ![]()

The camps always seem to be split on that one- I've always found those lyrics quite pretentious and overblown, with none of the spiritual conviction that one would usually expect from John.

OfflineLove the lyrics to ATU personally, there is something quite tranquil about them which doesnt feel forced.
"Thats a lie" from No Reply, a lyric with such intent and threat, sums up Johns mindset in that song.
The whole lyric from Here, There and Everywhere (which im not going to paste in). I dont believe they could ever be improved and it really annoys me that Paul altered them in Give My Regards To Broad Street.

OfflineThe last verse from "Girl":
Was she told when she was young that pain would lead to pleasure,
Did she understand it when they said
That a man must break his back to earn his day of leisure--
Does she still believe it when he's dead?
For reasons unbeknownst to me, I'm always intrigued by this excerpt from "I Am The Walrus":
Expert, texpert, choking smokers,
Don't you think the joker laughs at you?
(Ho, ho, ho, hee, hee, hee, ha, ha, ha!)

I think a lot of the appeal to that line is the delivery: you just feel like you're the girl he's preaching to/threatening. Love it.

Agreed wholeheartedly, that's a wonderfully thoughtful and witty verse. Also love the stream of word play in Fixing A Hole- "and it really doesn't matter, if I'm wrong I'm right, where I belong I'm right, where I belong!" Makes sense wherever you want to split up the sentences and creates multiple layers of meaning and contradiction in the line. And the bold, spiritual, mantraic statements of Because- very "mother earth."

You know, I've never made that observation about "Fixing A Hole"…A very insightful and interesting thought, Ben. ![]()

I, too, have a deep appreciation for the lyrics of "Because", particularly "Love is old, love is new; love is all, love is you." Beautiful. ![]()

OfflineFor No One might be my favorite. I also really dig Rocky Raccoon's lyrics. Paul's story-telling songs are the best.
I have also always loved the "You were in a car crash and you lost your hair" line from Don't Pass Me By just because I think it's funny.

Same here. IMO, another good example is "She's leaving home", especially this part:
Father snores as his wife gets into her dressing gown
Picks up the letter that's lying there
Standing alone at the top of the stairs
She breaks down and cries to her husband
"Daddy, our baby's gone"
These lines are always making me sad, whenever I listen to them.

Oh, I absolutely love John's "nonsense" lyrics – this one in particular:
Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye.
Crabalocker fishwife, pornographic priestess,
Boy, you been a naughty girl you let your knickers down.
The lyrics don't seem to make sense at all, but I like how John played with the words and how the words sound. ![]()
