OfflineWell Revolution #9 played loud thru earphones is a scarey business. All the sounds panning from left to right and dropping in and out without warning, must be like having a bad trip on LSD. Even more scarey when youre not expecting it

That happened to me when I heard the albums again after long, long time.
When I'm working very late at night and I listen to Revolution 9, sometimes my neighbor's dog starts howling

OfflineHmm, Revolution 9 isn't like a bad LSD trip, I'll tell you what a bad LSD trip is like because people should know. A bad LSD trip is when all of your insecurities are thrown on the table and you can't shake them, like imagine waking up from a nightmare. Generally, a nightmare consists of bad or unpleasant things from your life, but on a bad LSD trip, you can't just wake up, you're stuck with two options: either A) succumb to the bad things and assume the fetal position until the trip is over or B) face the problem(s) head on. It's like life, there are two options pretty much, love and hate, and if you can't allow yourself to feel the love to overcome the problem, you'll be in some trouble. I'm not trying to turn people off of LSD because the reward is much greater than the fallback usually, but people have to know what they are getting themselves into.
Revolution 9 is like a bad case of paranoia, you'll hear some voices, start to question it a little, but ultimately the feeling will just pass in about 8 and a half to 9 minutes…I wonder what John was actually trying to prove in that song, he says that he was trying to describe "when it happens" or whatever, but still I wonder if it's mostly gobbledegook or whether there was some actual reason behind each sound that we hear in that song.
Back on topic, Octopus's Garden just terrifies me…

OfflineWell the ending part on strawberry fields where you think the song is done and then it keeps going scares the crap outta me everytime. And this is more funny that scary, but on please mr postman, right at the beginning how they shout out WAIT! Always makes me jump. But then I start laughing. One time I was riding my bike and had my iPod on shuffle then it came on, and right when they shouted WAIT! I totally flinched and fell off my bike. It was halirous!

OfflineI know I'm going to sound like the worst Beatle fan ever but I've never listened to Revolution 9 or Revolution 1. In fact I've never listened to The White Album all the way through. I don't even know why. I suppose I'm just afriad of listning to Revolution 9. It seems really trippy. Please let me know your thoughts on when you first heard Revolution 9 because I'm really interested

OfflineWell it depends of the mood you're in, and how much you like this kind of music. (experimental one).
I'll recommend you to sit and listen to the whole White Album and not skip Revolution 9.

OfflineOn first play revolution 9 was strange and i didnt get it - i thought of it as a 'beatle song', was looking for a nice tune and lyric (i was young at the time) and its not. It didnt help that Revolution 1 is so laid back so was not prepared for what was coming. When i do listen to it now, and only when playing the white album thru, i try and listen to whats going on and all the little bits that John put in. And i need to be prepared, especially when wearing earphones.
Its certainly worth listening to at least once. I'd probably agree with Mith and say listen to the white album whole and dont skip it.
And ive no idea why you'd skip Revolution 9 yet listen to Good Night.

OfflineThe only song that I ever thought was a little bit creepy is Revolution 9 but after listening to it all the way through a few times it's not as creepy anymore because you know what's going to happen.I remember when I first listened to the whole song I was in my room at night and it was really dark in my room (which didn't help) and I was a little bit spooked.I actually think some of the parts are a little bit funny,I hope I'm not the only one who thinks that.If I have the volume up really loud, whenever Revolution starts playing I jump because of the guitar part,I don't think the song's scary though.

Thanks for the advice! I haven't listened to Good Night all the way through either. I'm such a terrible Beatles fan! I can remember when I first listned to Rocky Raccoon, I was on a train home and it came on shuffle on my iPod. Since then, it's been one of my favourites. I don't think I've listened to I'm So Tired, Yer Blues, Mother Nature's Son, Sexy Sadie (mainly because one of my closest friends is called Sadie and I just can't picture it), Revolution 1, Cry Baby Cry, Good Night and Revolution 9. That will be my goal. When I'm next free, I shall sit down and listen to the album all the way through. What would be best though, vinyl or CD?
Thanks again everyone

OfflineRegarding cd or vinyl, i firmly believe vinyl is the best way to listen to music. The sound is far fuller and the excitement of hearing the needle on the record at the beginning lifts the experience (unless its scratched when you want to throw it like a frisbee). Tho cd is far easier and there is nothing bad in it at all. If the music is good then the listen experience will always be a delight.
I need to get a new needle for my record player.

OfflineI actually find a lot of Beatles songs a bit creepy, even ones that don't seem creepy to most people. I'm a little scared of I'm So Tired because at the end John mumbles something like "Ah, monsieur, monsieur, monsieur, how about another one?" and I watched a YouTube video that played it backwards and it sounds like "Paul is a dead man, miss him, miss him, MISS HIM!" which is really creepy. And Blue Jay Way is creepy, especially since a part of it played backwards sounds like (I don't remember the whole thing but here's what I remember) "He said let me out, let me out, Paul is Hare Krishna, Paulie is very bloody, Paulie is bloody" or something like that… Revolution 9 is really creepy, and the "Turn me on, dead man" thing is really really creepy. Don't Pass Me By creeps me out slightly because some of the lyrics are "You were in a car crash and you lost your hair," which makes me think of the Paul is Dead thing (if you haven't noticed by now, I am very scared of the Paul is Dead rumor), and if you play part of it backwards it sounds like "Who'd we pay for now, we pay for now, it's that one." A Day in the Life is creepy because of the orchestra part before "Woke up, fell out of bed, etc." and before the end, plus the end is creepy, especially when you play the gibberish at the end backwards and it sounds like "Will Paul be back as Superman?" All Together Now scares me because of its innocence, which is sort of weird, but whatever. Plus some people think the lyrics "All together now" played backwards sounds like "I buried Paul," but to me it sounds like "Hi, my name is Paul." Lovely Rita creeps me out just the tiniest smidgen of a bit because apparently it's about the person who caused the car crash. Long, Long, Long, especially the end of it, is creepy, and not because it has anything to do with the Paul is dead rumor (gasp!). Good Night is kind of creepy because it comes right after Revolution 9 and it seems nice but it's often the nicest things that scare me the most and the whisper at the end is creepy. The end of Glass Onion creeps me out a bit. That short song-type thing at the end of Cry Baby Cry (Can You Take Me Back Where I Came From) scares me a little. The way Helter Skelter fades out and comes back in scares me, just like the way Strawberry Fields Forever fades out and comes back in, which also scares me. Flying and the end of Magical Mystery Tour (the song) creep me out for inexplicable reasons. There's probably more, but this is all I can think of right now. By the way, I love all of the songs I just named and I don't believe in the Paul is Dead rumor. I am a contradiction.

OfflineFunny, I was thinking of this topic because I found out that the last two lines of my favorite Beatles song, "Norwegian Wood," are pretty crazypants, referencing burning a woman's place down just because she won't have sex with the narrator. That kind of ruined the song for me.
But now I've decided to pretend I didn't hear that and go back to my original assumption, which is he just got the fireplace going while the woman was at work. Presumptuous, perhaps, but not half as creepy as burning the place down. :-/

OfflineHave always loved that line. Such a great twist. A one night stand fails to happen and the guy goes all crazy and burns the place down. Not many folk apart from John would have written a line that good and which can be taken at such opposite ends of the spectrum.
Other scary moments of Johns would be his delivery of "that's a lie" in No Reply and everything about You Cant Do That and Run For Your Life. Those are 'you'd better watch out if you get on my wrong side cause you will be running for help and getting a warrant issued to ensure i cant get anywhere close to you cause if i do…' moments. The kind of guy who then dates your sister, boils your rabbit and screws with your mind, making you believe youre losing it big time.
Actually listening to No Reply the "if i were you.." section is a thinly veiled threat if ever there was one.
