I’ve been meaning to put this conversation into this thread because this is where I would think of looking for it in the future. I’ll leave the original posts where they are and copy the pertinent part of the conversation into this post.

This is a really cool observation, Ahhh Girl. I imagine that John Lennon , being such a practitioner of clever wordplay, would keep notebooks full of phrases that either he thought up, overheard, or mis-overheard. (I keep notebooks of these types of phrases.) That’s very interesting that two consecutively running songs would contain basically the same phrase. I’d like to think that if John was ever asked about this, that he would laugh and say “Now, how did that get by ‘quality control?’ Ya know, once I use these phrases in a song, I’ve got to start crossing them out, because I tend to forget and then I might use them again.” :D

Following onto the above post, I am thinking of Beatles songs that include the word “away” in honor of my upcoming trip.

What are all their songs that include the word away?

In addition to those stated above:

Don’t Bother Me : “So go away, leave me alone…”

Hmmm… not a friendly start…

I’m Only Sleeping (thanks again to the Revolver cover on my wall! Incredibly useful, that): “…I’m miles away…”

Lovely Rita : “…tow your heart away…”

Across The Universe : “…they slip away…”

She’s Leaving Home : “…she is far away…”

Any Time At All : “If the sun has faded away…”

Things We Said Today : “…wishing you weren’t so far away…”

I’ll Be Back : “…if I ran away from you…”

Wait : “…I’ve been away now…”

Okay, I’d better stop now.

George’s “When We Was Fab”, which I was just listening to, has a significant reference to the buzz that is going to come and “take you awaaayyy…. take you awaaayyy…”, with echoey MMT-style vocals.

Anyway…

Not that they are connected or anything, but I thought about this this morning while listening to Rubber Soul .

First you hear about nowhere man living in his nowhere land. Then 6 songs later we get

I’m Looking Through You
And you’re nowhere

Here’s a chart that shows the self references in Beatles songs:

They continued doing it in their solo careers.

I can think of two articles of clothing that needed to be fixed. What are they? We’ll see if you all think of any others.

Also, let’s list all the articles of clothing in Beatles songs. Write the article of clothing and the song title.

“Knit a swear by the fireside.” When I’m 64.

Stocking need mending in ‘Lady Madonna is the better bet actually.

The two obvious songs are

Old Brown Shoe

Blue Suede Shoes (Anthology 3 )

The two “fixing” ones I thought about were Lady Madonna ‘s stockings needing mending and Father McKenzie’s socks needing darning in Eleanor Rigby .
