The next time Paul does one of those live internet things where he answers peoples questions someone should go on and ask him who does the ahhh's on ADITL stating that its causing wars on fan forums.
That would be really great.
Just imagine this possible answers:
A) I can't remember. I must have been taken something weird …
B) Let me think … maybe Ringo?
C) You guys are geeks.
D) That must have been John. Or was it me?
Arrrggg!

Include that youtube clip to refresh his memory. And a note saying no silly answers and the suggestion of letting us hear the recording process – just for clarity nothing more.

OfflineFor years and years and years, I was convinced it was John…. and then one day I was listening to it in headphones and thought "holy smokes, that's Paul's voice! I've been wrong all these years"….. now I'm just not sure. The voice is so drenched in echo that it gives it a Lennon quality….. but I do hear McCartney when it reaches for the upper notes in the middle… so who knows? Does it really matter? This is a helluva great song and one of the best true Lennon/McCartney collaborations in the entire Beatles' catalogue. Why quibble over this? ("Because it's fun.. and besides I'm right," cry most of those who have responded in this thread.)
When I see anyone type "without a doubt, it's ______", I just chuckle and think to myself "are you kidding? The answer to this question will never be without a doubt!" It's like the debate over who warbles "She Loves You Yeah Yeah Yeah" at the end of "All You Need Is Love" -- I say it's John, and the video shows him singing at least the end part of it…… but a good friend of mine is convinced Paul actually started it off and John finished it. (Here I go starting another argument!)

I'm exactly the same- more John-like at the beginning, more Paul-like towards the end. For that reason I'm convinced both of them sing it together, with Paul's voice brought out slightly more in the mix as it goes on because of his ease on the higher notes. Why else would there be such colossal debate? John fans want to hear John and Paul fans want to hear Paul, and they both hear who they want to because they are BOTH SINGING.

OfflineGood point ben. I think most people wh say it's john singing are more john fans and more people who say it's aul singing are more paul fans. This is at least true for me because I'm more paul fan. After reading your post I also think it's both singing

Yep, I'm in the "they take turns singing" camp too (prob'ly already said so 7 times in this thread)
I am also in that camp – listened to it this weekend in surround sound. I forget which track was for which singer, but for the sake of argument (how apropos for this thread) let's say John's voice is on the left track.
John's vocals are in the left track. After Paul's "woke up…" part in the right track, the ahs start in that same track. They then fade the vocals to left, right, left; at which point John's vocal starts in the left track again. I really do believe it's a bit of both.

Depending on which source I listen to it, it sounds more like Paul and at times more like John, the beginning, I mean. But this is making me insane, I don't know if I should trust my senses anymore after having so much presumptions. And anyway, like someone else said, I think Paul has the ability to imitate John's way of singing and John can imitate Paul, as well. It's so frickin hard to tell them apart at times

OfflineThis must be the thread from hell (sorry, PaulsBass…) because it has made me begin to question my Beatles allegiance--and I'm sure there are plenty of other die-hard fans out there who feel as if theirs has been equally tested. I had always been so certain that it was John singing the "aaaah" part on "A Day In The Life"; but after finding this topic and reading everyone's opinions, I'm beginning to doubt my senses. Curse this devilish thread! ![]()

OfflineIt's one voice all the way – the echo may trick you, but it's one voice. The vocal track shows it.
And, it can't be them both, for one single reason. It's one voice!!

OfflineYes doubt – that clip sounds less like Paul (to me) than any other clip I've heard in the past.
I'm not saying anything definitive (still) because unless we here it from Paul, Ringo or George Martin we will never know. Anything else is simply pure speculation.

OfflineSorry but i hear John in there with Paul having previously been firmly in the John only brigade.
Some hear one voice, some two.
Some just John.
Some just Paul.
Some both John and Paul.
And some believe Paul died a month or two earlier so it's false Paul.
Maybe False Paul had a voice that could sound like Johns and thats the answer.
Duhn, duhn, duhhhhnnn!!!
