Sounds like a fan created remix to me where they have doubled vocals here and there as well as speeding it up (is the mono normally that fast)?

I’m the exception– A Day In The Life is not my favourite a-hard-days-night-ringo-6

I like Fixing A Hole and Lovely Rita the best, although there was a time when I would have told you Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds was my favourite Beatles song, period… I didn’t know very many back then. ahdn_paul_01

Fixing A Hole is just such a gleeful declaration of ‘I don’t give a darn about the rest of the worried world who haven’t been turned on to psychedelic happiness’, you can’t not sing along. All that about finding a place for your mind to wander where it will, without distractions from the people who runaround and worry you, strikes a chord with me. I particularly love the sentiment expressed at the end– ‘I’m taking the time for a number of things that weren’t important yesterday…’

Pretty awesome bass as well.

(That makes me sound a right hippie. a-hard-days-night-ringo-12

Lovely Rita is here pretty much exclusively for the opening and closing harmonies, which blew my mind the first time I heard them and continue to do so to this day. Oh yeah, and the rest of the song, with that ballad-esque storytelling and Paul’s shout of ‘RI-ta!’ right before that plunky piano break, is pretty fab stuff too.

(Also, I like the name Rita. a-hard-days-night-george-9

Yes I was guessing that that was what an ‘outtake’ would be…….perhaps the first I’ve heard…but this one to me at least sounds clearer and with the vocals more prominent ……….I love it.

I amn’t a big Pepper’s fan, it is a great album but I don’t connect with it like I do with nearly every other Beatles album, which is odd as I love psychedelic rock. The only songs that I listen to outside of going-through-the-entire-album are ‘A Day In The Life ‘, ‘Lucy in the Sky…’ and ‘Within You and Without You’ (obligatory George track).

Not that you have to, but if people would say why the song is their favorite (like the thread title says), I would enjoy reading the reviews.

I kind of feel the same way, although in my case perhaps I’ve worn it out as I was quite potty on it some years ago (during the first Beatlemania session).

But then, if that were so, I’d also be sick of MMT and the White Album , and I’m not.

Um… so… yes, I love Fixing A Hole for its upbeat-ness, bass, and I totally ‘get’ the lyrics. I love Lovely Rita for the opening harmonies, ridiculously catchy rhymes, and general sense of fun.

Is anyone seeing a Paul bias here? a-hard-days-night-paul-4

Here were my earlier stated reasons for loving Sgt. Pepper /Reprise: I think the intro for the title track and reprise are just perfect; the warm up, bright guitar chords, great drums, and audacious horns engage you and let you know you are about to participate in a unique musical experience.

Picture yourself in the Spring of 1967 (not in a boat on a river). You’ve heard about the Beatles’ new album, but you haven’t heard a lot, because: 1967.  As you look in the mirror to adjust your headband, straighten your peace medallion and comb your fingers through your long, luxurious hair, you wonder about what the boys may have done with the new one. The rumors are that it could be something completely different.  Could they possibly top Rubber Soul and Revolver ?  Impossible. Still, the anticipation builds until June, when the radio starts playing some of the tracks.  That only whets the thirst.  Finally, you get your hands on the album. Your friends gather in the dingy apartment of the dude who has the best hi-fi system with the tallest speakers. You drop the record on the turntable.  The background buzz diminishes to a hush as you drop the needle.  Eerily, the crowd noise emanating from the speakers mirrors the mood in the room.  Then the first chords ring out,and you can just sit back and enjoy a great rocking experience.  The reprise rocks even harder: I’m a sucker for a countdown, and then those drums! The guitars!  God , it’s just so good.

I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

I guess whether you prefer A Day In The Life or the Reprise depends on whether you are a Mod or a Rocker.  I like them both, but I can’t think of what to call myself. a-hard-days-night-ringo-14

My favorite is either Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite or Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band Reprise. I love the way both of them sound, and especially how different Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite sounds from everything else, and having dance parties to the Reprise!heart

For me, there’s absolutely no contest about the finest song on PEPPER — and maybe the finest song in The Beatles Catalogue.

I think Sgt Pepper is a really good — but not fantastically great — album, and I’d rank it my 5th or 6th favourite Beatles album.  The songs are well played, well recorded, and certainly different than anything else that was around at that time, which is why it had such an impact.  You had Billy Shears, the girl with kaleidoscope eyes, Lovely Rita , a trip to the circus, a meditation on seeing beyond yourself and finding peace of mind — and even barnyard animals!   They are all pretty good songs — but I’m not sure I’d call them “great” songs.

But then, after Sgt Pepper and his band came out to say goodnight to the cheering crowds, you hear those lonely guitar strums, that stark piano — and that voice!  That echoey, ominous John Lennon voice that “sends shivers down the spine”, as George Martin said, and you hear the mournful story about the lucky man who made the grade but lost it all in a moment of inattention (maybe he was texting!).  “A Day In The Life ” is such a monumental song — and a spine-tingling performance — that I’m sure the first time people heard it way back in 1967, they absolutely HAD to play that whole album all over again, just to get swept up in the “orgasm of sound” that builds up twice in the song.  It still boggles my mind that a band that sang “Love Love Me Do , you know I love you, I’ll always be true” in 1962 could produce something like this just a little over four years later.

PS:  the one song that makes me cringe every time I hear it is “When I’m 64” — I couldn’t believe it when I first heard it all those years ago, and now that I’m closing in on that milestone, I REALLY hate it!  lol  How could a self-respecting rock band record something like this?   And then place it immediately after something as exotic as “Within You Without You “???

Rereading this thread I love all the reviews really. It’s an album that can sound really dated, particularly if you’re aware of the music of the period, but that doesn’t change its fascination.

I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe.  This has been true for 2016 & 2017 Sig-Badge.png but I may have to get more specific in the future.

My fave is probably When I’m Sixty Four, just a nice song amongst all the way out tracks.
