SGT. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (1967) AVERAGED RANK

This is a copy paste:

I decided to go on a task of continuing and updating list of every post averaged in the thread to create a decent ranking of the tracks off every album. In this case Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band. I clarify my process and rules below.

1 – A Day in the Life (381 points)

2 – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (277 points)

3 – Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (262 points)

4 – With a Little Help from My Friends (251 points)

5 – Getting Better (232 points)

6 – Within You Without You (227 points)

7 – Fixing a Hole (206 points)

8 – Lovely Rita (205 points)

9 – Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! (183 points)

10 – Good Morning Good Morning (178 points)

11 – She’s Leaving Home (172 points)

12 – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) (128 points)

13 – When I’m Sixty-Four (103 points)

Averaging process and rules:

A pretty classic averaging system; it goes basically by giving the maximum amount of points to the top track on every post (in this case 12) and as the list progresses into the “worst” tracks each track gets one point less. The last track gets no points. For this to apply the post must have the 13 Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band songs ranked.

IMPORTANT: if you think one of your rankings might have one of these ambiguous qualities that might disqualify it and you want to be counted in the averaging DON’T edit it; post it again with more detail, otherwise I won’t be able to subtract the points and add them again and it won’t be counted anyway.a-hard-days-night-paul-11

Particular cases:

-NO. 1- Sometimes if there is a track missing but there’s a written clarification, it can be counted. In the case of Abbey Road , for instance, some people don’t count Her Majesty . In that case I count the post and give no points to Her Majesty only if there is a written statement of why its missing. If one track is missing and the post doesn’t have any written clarification then it is considered a mistake and therefore disqualified.

-NO. 2- The tracklist considered is taken out of the Wikipedia/RYM/Discogs “official” tracklists. This means those who rank the Abbey Road Medley as a whole don’t get counted unless they clarify by writing that the tracks separately also rank that way, same with any variation of the sort.

-NO. 3- If a person implies to a previous post that “that would exactly be [their] ranking” and don’t post any ranking themselves, then the points of the first person will be added a second time in behalf of the second person.

-NO. 4- Only one person each ranking. If you posted several times your changes, only the last one will be counted (unless it has any mistakes, missing tracks, etc., in that case then the last one that has no issues will be the one counted).

-NO. 5- The rankings are considered given the numbers apply to them, “1” universally represents the top spot. Unless there is a written statement that clarifies it’s the other way around, this is the way it will be counted.

-NO. 6- If there are no numbers on the ranking and no written clarification it could go either way. At first I used to think the ones at the top were the number 1 spot but in some cases it just isn’t that way. So I decided I’ll just grab the worst rated track up to that point and I see if it falls on the top half or the bottom half. If it falls on the top half I’ll consider the bottom half the top spot and if it falls on the bottom half then I’ll consider the top half the top spot. It might be unfair at times as it might reverse someones’ ranking if they are unlucky by voting positively a previously negatively voted track, but in the grand scheme of things I think it was mostly accurate. In case that the number of tracks is odd (A Hard Day’s Night , Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour , Yellow Submarine ‘s Side B & Abbey Road ) and the worst rated track falls in precisely the middle spot then I just take the second to worst rated and judge as to where that one falls.

-NO. 7- If there are “ties” in someone’s ranking their ranking can still be counted but it won’t represent exactly the ties in the overall averaging. If there is still a list-like format then I go from the bottom to the top adding points just like usual, so tied tracks can get different scores but just differing in one single point or two (unless you tie like 5 tracks together), but I think it’s more fair than not letting those people participate at all. It might seem unfair but if the tied tracks were to get the same points, it would increasingly leave an averaging gap between those songs so it’s mathematically better to just stick to the original adding process.

-NO. 8- If there are two tracks that are “tied” then I will just give more points to the one that is named first, regardless of descriptions, just to keep the whole thing going. Unless there’s a specific written clarification of why one of the tracks is better or more of a favourite, then I’ll just give more points to the one named first.

-NO. 9- However, if there’s a tie between three tracks (or more) then that post will no longer be counted unless the list has a specific ranking format in which case see item “-NO. 7-“.

-NO. 10- I guess that if someone doesn’t want to be counted in the averaging he can ask me not to count him in but I hope nobody does that so we get his opinion tooahdn_john_08_gif

All of these rules are up to debate if someone disagrees with part of the judgement. I’m sure we can reach an agreement if they are considered questionable.

Also here’s a playlist with the results from worst to best in case you want to see how effective it proves in practice (I’ll try edit these as well):

  1. With A Little Help From My Friends — My most played track on the album
  2. Within You Without You — Really unique and experimental
  3. A Day In The Life — One of the best songs lyrically.
  4. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds — A nice psychadelic song all around
  5. Sgt Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band — Gave the album it’s theme.
  6. Getting Better — I appreciate Lennon’s honesty at least
  7. She’s Leaving Home — Good chorus
  8. Fixing A Hole
  9. Good Morning Good Morning
  10. Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite
  11. Sgt Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) — Good closer, but derivative of course.
  12. Lovely Rita — Kinda generic.
  13. When I’m Sixty Four — Not bad.  Just the least interesting track.

1. Sgt Peppers lonely hearts club band.( a masterpiece with great instrumentals – 10/10)

2. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (one of my favourite Beatles songs, very psychedelic, which I love – 10/10)

3. With A Little Help From My Friends .(We all kno the Beatles wrote it then gave it away, but they managed to beat the original – 9.2/10)

4. Within You Without You (great song, with an amazing  Indian feel to it. One of my favourite George songs – 9/10

5. Good Morning( great, the way it repeats at the end and slowly becomes guten morgen is brilliant – 8.9/10)

6. Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite . (Nice song with a sort of classical feel to it – 8.8/10)

7. Sgt Peppers lonely hearts club band (reprise)(I love this song and like the whole way it brings an end to the album, despite A Day In The Life coming after it – 8.8/10)

8. A Day In The Life (this song is truly a master piece, enough said – 8.5/10)

9. She’s Leaving Home (a sort of slow song that tackles a more real problem – 8.2/10)

10. Getting Better (Great song, love the way John interjects – 7.8/10)

11. When I’m 64(a joyful little song but is very simple – 7.4/10)

12. Lovely Rita (despite it being near the bottom of this list, it’s still a nice song. It sorta brings back some of the elements of their early songs- 7/10)

13. Fixing A Hole (compared to the rest of the album, this song is a little underwhelming – 6/10)

  1. A Day In The Life – My favourite Beatles song. I love everything about it (except for the Run-Out Groove), especially Lennon’s parts.
  2. With A Little Help From My Friends – One of my favourite songs with Ringo on lead vocals.
  3. Getting Better
  4. Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band – A great way to open the album. I like the crowd noises and the orchestra.
  5. Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite
  6. She’s Leaving Home – Love the story it’s telling.
  7. Fixing A Hole
  8. Good Morning Good Morning
  9. Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)
  10. When I’m Sixty-Four
  11. Within You Without You – A cool and interesting song. It’s sad I had to put it this low.
  12. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds – I loved it when I was younger, but I’ve heard it too many times now. I think it is a little annoying. I like the lyrics in the verses though.
  13. Lovely Rita – I never liked it. It always irritates me.

This was not easy. I will probably change my mind a lot.

1. A Day In The Life – It seems like an obvious choice, but this is the Beatles at their most creative, most unified, and most progressive. There’s nothing else like it in music.

2. Within You Without You . Best lyrics of the album. Solidifies George’s craftsmanship and Pepper as a masterpiece.

3. Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band- the best Beatles opener for an album imo.

4. She’s Leaving Home – fantastic harmony with that Greek chorus by John.

5. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds – Classic organ phrase by Paul really makes this song what it is. John’s lyrics are fantastical and surreal.

6. Fixing A Hole – Harpsichord underneath guitar licks with great precision. Fantastic track.

7. With A Little Help From My Friends – Ringo’s greatest vocal.

8. When I’m Sixty-Four . Lovely- clarinets and melody. One of Paul’s best on the album.

9. Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite- Great piece of modern music by John. Kalaedescopic.

10. Good Morning Good Morning – one of the best guitar solos in the Beatles discography.

11. Getting Better – truly experimental track. Indian and Western pop instrumentation.

12. Lovely Rita – great piano

13. The Reprise- fantastic intro to A Day In The Life . A great rocker on its own. Too short to rank above any other of these marvelous tracks.

13. She’s Leaving Home

I agree with She’s Leaving Home being the worst song on the album. I still think it is a good song, but an experiment by Paul that was not quite up to par with his others.

Inspired by a story in the Daily Mail about a teenage runaway, She’s Leaving Home was described by George Martin as “not, strictly speaking, a Beatles song at all,” and “pure McCartney, from start to finish”.

The Beatles Bible.

It was scored by Mike Leander, a freelance producer and arranger, because George Martin was unavailable at the short notice demanded by McCartney.

13. When I’m Sixty-Four – I actually like this song, especially the backing vocals but I needed a track on the bottom and this is it.

12. Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) – I like the reprise as it closes the “concept” of Sgt Pepper and it’s a good song that doesn’t go to long as well.

11. Lovely Rita – I like this song, even though it’s silly but I still enjoy it.

10. She’s Leaving Home – I like both Paul and John’s vocals on this song and the lyrics are very well written.

9. Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band – Much like Magical Mystery Tour this song works well as an intro to the album but this is a much better song and I love the guitar work on this song.

8. Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite – Fun imaginative track and I do feel like I am at the circus when I listen to it.

7. With A Little Help From My Friends – Maybe the best Ringo song as a Beatle. It is the perfect vehicle for him.

6. Within You Without You – I love the music and lyrics for this song. George had more than come into his own by this point.

5. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds – Very psychedelic and very imaginative lyrics but I am a little sick of this song now but when I am in the mood I do really enjoy it.

4. Getting Better – The chorus to this song is the highlight for me. The opening chords kind of remind me of She’s A Woman , which isn’t a bad thing.

3. Fixing A Hole – I used to not think much of this song but over the years it has really started to grow on me. I like the chorus especially.

2. Good Morning, Good Morning – I don’t think many people like this song, especially John but I like it. I love Ringo’s drumming, the guitar work, and the ending with all of the animal noises.

1. A Day In The Life – This song is a masterpiece. I love everything about this song. The lyrics, the backwards orchestra, and the end note. This song has a lot going for it and I yet to get sick of it.

And in the end the lunch you take is equal to the lunch you bake.

13. Lovely Rita – the only song I dislike. I love the opening but the rest is filler.

12. Good Morning Good Morning – Love the guitar solo but would have been better as a shorter bonus track.

11. When I’m Sixty Four – Brilliant: witty, well arranged and melodic.

10. Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite ! – Love the fairground thing.

9. Within You Without You – Great orchestra/sitar combo

8. Fixing A Hole – This one has grown on me a lot. Great guitar solo.

7. Sgt Pepper (reprise)

6. Sgt Pepper

5. She’s Leaving Home – Seems like Ticket To Ride mixed with Eleanor Rigby .

4. Getting Better – Perfect pop.

3. With A Little Help – Just a great singalong.

2. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds – love the psychedelia

1. A Day In The Life – the perfect finale

13. Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite! (I can’t stand this song. No idea why.)

12. Lovely Rita (it’s alright, I think parts of it are fantastic)

11. Reprise (Nice way to close the concept, as others said)

10. Good Morning Good Morning (fantastic opening, the verses are meh to me)

9. When I’m Sixty-Four (second best of Paul’s “granny shit,” only losing to Honey Pie which I love.)

8. Fixing A Hole (extremely underrated track, very good lyrics)

7. Getting Better (Fantastic song all around)

6. She’s Leaving Home (great story and great song.)

5.  Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band (it’s a classic, great instrumentation)

4. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (masterpiece)

3. With A Little Help From My Friends (Great RINGO vocals)

2. Within You Without You (top 15 Beatles songs, the lyrics are the best they ever were.)

1. A Day In The Life (sends shivers up and down my spine. The best song of ALL TIME.)

Sgt Pepper is my favourite Beatles album so it’s incredibly difficult to rank. I love every song!

My list:

13. When I’m Sixty-Four – Love the song but it comes last since i’m not the biggest fan of Paul’s ‘granny shit’ songs. Miles better then Honey Pie for me though (that’s one of my least favourite Beatles tracks).

12. Sgt Pepper Reprise – Great little rocker and it ties into the concept aspect of the album brilliantly. I love the way how it falls into the mother of all songs…

11. Lovely Rita – I hate to have to put this song so low since I absolutely love it. It’s one of the best songs on the album to singalong to.

10. Good Morning Good Morning – Again I love this song, however it used to be my least favourite at point. It took me a while to appreciate how great it is. It received one of the best treatments on the remix.

9. Sgt Pepper – Brilliant intro to the album, the only reason why it’s this low is because it’s been played so much.

8. Fixing A Hole – As people have rightly pointed out this is a very underrated song and a McCartney gem.

7. Getting Better – Early on this used to be one of my favourites from the album. I guess i’ve probably heard it too much. I love the ‘I used to be cruel’ section.

6. She’s Leaving Home – A truly beautiful, beautiful song. Again this song sounds superb on the remix.

5. With A Little Help From My Friends – The best Ringo song of the Beatles catalogue. Again would probably be higher if it wasn’t so overplayed.

4. Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite ! – I don’t understand why some fans dislike this song. For me it’s John at his creative and witty best. It took me a while to appreciate it fully but now I love everything about it.

3. Within You Without You – Up there with George’s best Beatles songs. It has the most philosophical lyrics of the whole album and the instrumental section is truly stunning.

2. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds – For me Sgt Pepper is an album about taking the listener on a journey. This song is a perfect example of this as the listener is effectively taken down a rabbit hole into a world of psychedlic fantasy. It’s easily one of John’s best songs.

1. A Day In The Life – The best song on the album, the best Beatles song in general and my favourite song of all time. This song changed music forever. Is it one of the greatest pieces of music ever written? Quite possibly…
