OfflineA musical aspect that doesn't get mentioned that often is how masterfully the Beatles used percussion instruments in their songs.
I'd like to put your attention especially to their use of the tambourine during their "Help"/"Rubber Soul" years.
Notice how the tambourine is an essential part of the groove in "Ticket to ride", "Drive my car", "You won't see me", "Think for yourself", "Wait" etc. Some might say it's too loud, but it's really great that way.
Another favourite of mine is "Paperback writer". Check out how the tambourine drives the whole song!!

OfflineI noticed right around the Help/Rubber Soul days they started using percussion more often, usually with tambourine, maracas or sometimes congas. In songs like Think For Yourself and Wait the tambourine and maracas are quite important. I also find that they have a very unique sounding tambourine that they used in Help, Tomorrow Never Knows, Hey Bulldog it sounds more metallic than normal ones.

I like the tambourine in "You've got to hide your love away".
Specially how Ringo plays it in Help.
I like the "pandereta" a lot. (that's the name in Spanish) I haven't noticed it in Paperback Writer though….

In paperback writer you can hear the tambourine on the third beat of almost every bar.
Excactly. It's that fast "chaka-chaka-chaka-chak" which fills the gap between the snares and makes it much more interesting.
While we're at it: In "A hard day's night" one of the coolest things are the frantic bongos! Anyone agrees?

wow you're right, I've never really noticed those bongos until now, they're quite mixed in and hard to notice. It's the same with A day in the life, I never heard those (congas technically) until I listened to the four track; they're also very interesting

I've always been confused by the percussion in Tell Me What You See, it sounds like there's a washboard or something being used. But according to Joe it is a güiro. Was this the only song that they used this instrument in?
It does sound like a guiro to me, but I guess that is kind of similar to a washboard anyways. I don't think I've heard them play it in any other songs.
