Thanks for breaking that down.

I'm currently working on playing Paul Simon's version of Anji, but will check into the Word. Always liked that song, and for better or for worse, was Lennon's first preachy song (and the precursor to All You Need Is Love).

It's remarkable how much time they devoted to those harmonies. Kinda lost from the White Album on (except "Because")...

I agree, the overdriven harmonium really makes it stand out, but I'd have to say my favorite part are the odd harmonies, especially during the "It's so fine, it's sunshine" bits. I've discovered that if you play that G-A-F-G bit on the guitar just using an F-shape (i.e. make the F chord on the 3rd fret instead of the first so it's a G) and slide accordingly, you can actually figure out the 3 part harmony by playing single strings...

(Make these chord shapes, but only play the red note)

John's harmony:

e----3----5----1----3

B----3----5----1----3

G----4----6----2----4

D----5----7----3----5

Paul's harmony:

Yup! Run for your life is right.

The chords are | G A | F G | to that bit. Whatever instrument the Beatles or anyone else plays it on.

Also hilarious is that one can learn from both the good and the bad books that Lennon has read! Deep!

Best bit of the tune is the GHM Harmonium contribution. Fierce!

Well, I just took a listen to the rock band multitrack, and it turns out that during that specific part the piano stops playing.

So when they're singing: "It's so fine, it's sunshine, it's the" there is no piano. The piano comes back right as they sing "word".

So far, I've determined that during this part...

- The guitar is doing 4 descending notes (D-Db-C-B)

- The bass is playing that funky A-D-B-A, G-C-D-G bit

What exactly is the piano playing? When playing along, I play G-A-F-G on the "So" (G) "Fine" (A) "Sun" (F) "Shine" (G) though I'm not sure if that's what is actually on the record.

On a quasi-silly note, is John trying to say that "the word" (love) is "so fine and sunshine" or it is "so fine that it is sunshine"?
