Since Linde brought up bass, I've always liked the bass playing of Klaus Voormann (he's also the guy who drew the intricate Revolver album cover) on the song "Step Lightly" on the post-Beatles Ringo solo album that was famous for featuring all four Beatles (though on separate tracks).

Voormann plays the bass in a cool jazz style, with some nice "walking bass" riffs here and there. And the bass has a nice deep trebly sound to it, reminiscentof Paul's "fuzz bass" but more restrained (not so "fuzzy").

Also of note:

1) very neat use of clarinets

2) a tap-dancing solo by Ringo!

Listen to Cream's "Disraeli Gears" (1967) "Wheels of Fire" albums (1968), Hendrix' first two albums "Axis:Bold As Love" (1967) or the heavier bits from The Who's "The Who Sell Out" (1967)...in the case of the heavier songs/music, The Beatles were playing catch up with what was going on around them.

To me this sounds more Black Sabbath than Cream to be honest.

Absolutely! I love the guitar tone they had during that 1966/Revolver period...really chiming and shimmery but with real balls and crunch behind it. Paperback Writer, Rain, She Said She Said, Taxman, etc. Great sound!

I love "Happiness is a warm gun", when it goes Zeppelin-esque 2-3 years before even their debut album . Lennon genius!

I love that part too, proves how diverse The Beatles could be. (Led Zep's debut album was recorded in '68, released in January/March (UK) 1969 though).

Yeah sorry about the Zepp thing, but you can't really find this guitar bits on their debut. I should actually say Black Sabbath for that matter <img class="spSmiley" alt=":)" src="http://www.beatlesbible.com/wp/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif" ...

Probably because of the bad mixing, but the bass is really cool on the track.
