I've been trying to find out the exact date of the encounter between The Beatles and disgraced peer (then an undergraduate) Jeffrey Archer.

Pic here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/…..447240.stm

I've read that the pic was taken either at Brasenose College, Oxford, and backstage after a Liverpool show. The former seems more likely, but the two sources that claim it's Liverpool are the BBC and the Guardian – both normally fairly reliable.

Anyone know the truth? And if so, what was the precise date? I'd like to add it to the blog, but can't unless I know when it happened!

Hi Billy. Thanks for that – yes, it was the money shot (pardon the pun) that I meant.

Yes it was Brasenose College.  The Beatles had played the Carfax Assembly Rooms in Oxford on 16 February 1963 (that venue no longer exists by the way).

My dad (who studied with Jeffrey Archer at Brasenose College, Oxford) was there with them on that day.  That was March 5, 1964. Until about 2 years ago I had stationery from the college, signed by the Fab Four, and dated precisely the date I have mentioned. Wherher or not that photo has anything to do with it, no idea. My dad used to recount how Harold Macmillan was there, too, and it was a fund-raising event (as a fund-raiser, you can keep a percentage .. this was Archer's moneyspinner as a student).

Oh fab – thanks very much for that.

I forgot all about this thread. I think it was the very first one I ever started on the forum, partly just to say something.

Sorry to be off-topic but I’m surprised that no one has mentioned this topic as being a piece of history. The Beatles Bible is so legendary (page 3 of Google when you type in The Beatles) that this should be more well known as the first ever forum topic. One day, I imagine it will be used as a question in Beatles trivia quizzes asking what the first topic on Beatles Bible was!

Anyway, please delete this if you think it strays off topic way too much.

In an incognito/private browser window I’m on page two for Beatles, and page four for The Beatles. The rankings change Now And Then . If I get onto page one for Beatles I’ll be very happy.

But yeah, this is a funny thread to start with. It’s difficult holding a conversation in an empty room, and I just happened to be wondering about that Jeffrey Archer photo when I thought “Hang on, I have a forum I could use for questions like this!” It only took six weeks to get a reply.

I’ve actually read a couple of Archer’s novels 35 years apart! I thought “Kane & Abel” was pretty good but I was in high school when I read that one and didn’t have terribly sophisticated literary tastes at the time. Then last October I started reading 1977’s “Shall We Tell the President?” because I found it for a quarter at a garage sale and it seemed timely (it’s about an assassination attempt on the first female POTUS) but it turned out to be terrible…and a few days after I finished it the real election happened and I became too depressed to read any more fiction at all for the next six months.

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

My sympathies, @Von Bontee. Nobody should read such drivel from a convicted villain!

What’s so bad about Jeff. As far as i know, The Beatles didn’t have a problem with him and the only crime he committed was screwing with the court.

What a silly statement! It is like turning around and saying, to defend their criminal actions, that The Beatles didn’t have a problem with Jimmy Savile or Rolf Harris. One shown to be probably the worst paedophile the United Kingdom has ever seen, while the other has been convicted and jailed for sexual assaults.

It is a smear on The Beatles to say they didn’t have a problem with such individuals when they were unaware of the crimes they committed, or would go on to commit.

I feel like I just stepped into history.

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.
