Into the Sky with Diamonds said
Today is the 50th anniversary of the first American TV broadcast concerning the Beatles.

Yes, the critics viewed them with something between bemusement and contempt, and their hair was seen as ridiculous. Honestly, had I been a parent back then I’m not sure I would have felt differently. I know how I’ve reacted to the Spice Girls, Britney Spears, etc… despite my attempts not to be like my own parents!

Thanks for this. I’d never heard of this broadcast.

It took me a while to figure out when people were talking about their “long hair” that the were referring mostly to the hair over their foreheads, because by today’s standards, the length of their hair in the book looks normal/rather short.

Love the line given by Edwin Newman in the original NBC audio report (in the link posted by ITSWD above)

“One reason for the Beatles popularity maybe that it’s almost impossible to hear them”.heart

From The Examiner:

What would John Lennon and a few other deceased rock stars look like today had they lived? On Nov. 18, Sachs Media Group released a set of a dozen images they commissioned that also included “what if?” portraits of Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, Elvis Presley and Jim Morrison of the Doors.

Apparently John would have become David Strathairn.

* The Examiner has an overview of the previously reported Changin’ Times: 101 Days That Shaped A Generation by Al Sussman.

* A little info, including credits on the Words Of Love video.

* CBC Interview with photographer Harry Benson coinciding with a retrospective in Toronto.

* From Classic Hits and Oldies:

The Beatles are back on the charts. On Air: Live At The BBC Volume 2, the Fab Four’s new compilation of early radio recordings, debuted at #7 on the Billboard 200 after selling 37,000 copies during its first week of release.

This marks The Beatles’ 31st album to reach the top 10 of the Billboard tally. Only three other artists have scored more top-10 albums: The Rolling Stones, with 36; Frank Sinatra, with 33; and Barbra Streisand, who has 32. Elvis Presley is in fifth place with 27.

* If you’re in the area:

Ken Womack, the 2013-14 Penn State Laureate and professor of English and Integrative Arts at Penn State Altoona, will speak from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, in Sharon Hall room 105 at Penn State Shenango. The title of his presentation is “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!: The evolving Artistry of the Beatles.” The event is free and open to the public.

Love those pics of what some celebrities would’ve looked like according to them. It’s interesting to think about that. I was actually asking myself the other day what John would’ve looked like now had he lived.

I was just thinking, isn’t it amazing how there’s still so much news about the Beatles everyday while they split up 43 years ago? That really says something.

I often think the same when I’m compiling news bits.

Interesting article in The Examiner today:

JFK’s death may have changed the course of Beatles history

If things had gone according to plan, the Beatles would have been featured in a story on “The CBS Evening News” on Nov. 22, 1963, Bruce Spizer, author of the celebrated “The Beatles Are Coming,” a detailed study of the rise of Beatlemania in the U.S., said in a phone interview. And had that happened, it might just have altered the future course of Beatlemania and Beatles history, he says.

“CBS did run that story on the morning of President Kennedy’s assassination. What’s significant about this is the normal procedure was if the feature story ran on ‘The CBS Morning News With Mike Wallace, it was rerun on “The CBS Evening News With Walter Cronkite.” And that because of the Kennedy assassination, it was not run that evening.”

And the fact the story didn’t run may have had a domino effect on the Beatles’ fortunes.

More at the link.

From The Examiner:

Remembering George Harrison : Twelve years after his passing, George Harrison will be remembered and honored by his fans and admirers at a public gathering being held from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 29 at his Hollywood Walk of Fame star located in front of the Capitol Records Tower Building at 1750 North Vine Street. Fans of Harrison and the Beatles are invited to bring flowers and candles to place around his star. Fans are also invited to perform music and poetry at the public remembrance during an “open mic” segment led by Chris Carter, the popular radio host of ‘Breakfast With the Beatles’.

It’s going to be a strange one as whilst its 13 years since George passed on on the 29th November it’s also 50 years since I Want To Hold Your Hand was released in the UK. So whilst there is the joy of one of the most important songs in music being released you also have the very sad loss of George.

Will get a large playlist of George’s music together and play it over the weekend.

Breakfast with the Beatles started with an announcement that a fan named Susan who’s been taking care of George’s star passed away. Chris Carter sounded pretty shaken by the news, and he’s dedicated the show to her.

BBC report on artists including the Beatles who have donated tracks for a Philippines Red Cross charity album.

Also Examiner reports on the taking of a new photo with Ringo and teenagers that was originally snapped in 1964 and included in his latest photobook and eyewitness reports on their meeting.

Carol Kennedy (US Ambassador to Japan) made an appearance at one of Paul’s Japanse ‘Out There’ concerts as they drew to a close.

And finally a Beatles fan got a letter from Jackie Kennedy shortly after JFK was assassinated back in November 1963.

Since Parlance is on holiday i’ll try and post some news items but no one can replace the fantastic work she does here (you don’t know what you got till its gone). If anyone else finds anything of interest please post it.

Paul’s been awarded a ‘Best Individual Acheivement’ award by Vegfest Uk, http://www.paulmccartney.com/n…..the-decade

Very good to hear, he deserves it.

Aw, that’s so sweet. It wasn’t so much a holiday – I usually get more sleep on those, haha. Still trying to catch up on school work, but at least my main project is done, so doing a bit of catch up:

Ringo:

* From The Examiner, the kids from that famous photograph got to see Love with Ringo in Vegas. The also posed for a new photo with him. I’m so glad they got the royal treatment, considering Ringo at first wasn’t interested in a reunion.

Paul:

*From the Examiner, Caroline Kennedy made an appearance at one of Paul’s Japan concerts.

New books:

* Also from the Examiner, a new book, The Beatles at Shea Stadium, is available to order. More on the book at WogBlog.

* The Beatles Blog has a review of another new photo book, Beatles Across the World.

[x-posted to the new books thread]

General:

* Article on rarely seen photos from the first American concert are on display in New Mexico until February.

* Last, as MMM posted at the thread under Pimp My Stuff, The Examiner interviewed me on my fan video for Paul’s song “Appreciate.” (Mods, I’m posting since it’s a news article, but if it’s not okay since it’s my own project, I’ll delete from this post).
