* The Examiner reports on tributes to Sir John Tavener at The Beatles Facebook and by Tony Bramwell and others. [x-posted to the non-Beatles Apple recordings thread]

* I got an email from Rock Paper Photo that for the month of Movember, a portion of proceeds of prints of any subject sporting a moustache or any other visible facial hair will go to the Movember charity. In the email, they featured pics of Paul and George.

* More on the Grammy tribute to the Beatles from Huffington Post:

NEW YORK (AP) — CBS is planning a two-hour special to mark the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ groundbreaking first appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.”

The Feb. 9 special will be billed as a Grammy Awards salute to the Beatles. It will be recorded the day after the Grammys are held two weeks earlier. Top contemporary artists will cover songs the Beatles performed on Sullivan, a historic night in music that launched Beatlemania in the United States.

The special will be aired 50 years to the day the Beatles appeared on Sullivan, in the same time slot and on the same network.

No participating artists were announced Thursday.

Forgot to post this as well… From Wirral News via a fanblog. Don’t know if this counts as news, but I couldn’t find a more appropriate “Silver Beetles” or “Pre-Hamburg Days”-type thread:

A BEATLES fan has solved the mystery of the band’s change of name.

Ken Harrison – no relation to George – says he found out when the Silver Beetles changed their name to become the Beatles.

Eagle-eyed Ken found the answer in Liscard’s Grosvenor Ballroom, as he looked though old newspaper cuttings from the Wallasey News hidden away in a drawer.

Ken now manages the building, where the Beatles regularly played in the 1960s.

He said: “It’s amazing what you find in old newspaper cuttings.”

Edit: More at WogBlog.

Wogblog reports of a music video for the BBC Words Of Love performance beginning to make the rounds (30 seconds of it was shown on the One Show (BBC 1) last Friday night (8th November).

More interesting he writes

We just got wind of something, videowise: A large cache of missing television material of the Beatles (Jukebox Jury, Top Of The Pops, Pop Goes Charts etc.) has been discovered and is currently being restored for tentatively a 2014/2015 release. Though how they will use this material depends on how the “On Air – Live At BBC Volume 2” and the remastered “Live At The BBC ” performs, saleswise. Still, exciting possibilities, and we are happy to hear that material thought lost a long time ago, survives.

Surely this is massive news if footage from the long lost appearances of Jukebox Jury and Top of the Pops have been found, so why nothing on the BBC or anywhere else? Great news tho.

Universal has apparently since taken it down. Hope it pops up again.

* A photo of Paul and his Sgt. Pepper Pudsey creation. Cuteness overload! This is so flipping adorable I think I have my new screensaver.

* John’s self-portrait for Grapefruit is going up for auction.

* As is the first fully signed White Album . The history detailed BeatlesNews is really interesting!

* Via Beatles Blogger: A new book on sale: The Beatles in America, a collaboration of the Smithsonian and Grammy Museums.

* Julian will be on Michael Des Barres‘ Show on Thursday.

* Via FB, Mark Lewisohn will be on a couple of radio shows: Beatlesongs and Fab 4 Free 4 All tonight.

Ringo news:

* The Examiner reports:

The David Lynch Foundation will honor Ringo Starr with a Peace & Love Award at a special event celebrating Lynch’s 68th birthday on Jan 20, 2014 at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, Beatles Examiner learned Nov. 15.

* And from an email from Genesis publications:

Next week the Genesis team will be joining Ringo in Las Vegas to celebrate the launch of his new book PHOTOGRAPH.

We invite you to explore a free walk-through exhibit of Ringo’s photographs, hosted at the Palms Casino Resort. Ringo will also be playing two nights at the Pearl Concert Theater. See full details below.

For those who wish to really make a weekend of it, Genesis is able to offer a VIP package with your choice of framed print, accomodation and concert tickets, available here.

Edit: Took a look at the VIP package, and just want to note that you do get to meet Ringo as part of the deal. Strikes me as a far better deal than the LA one, other than the fact the book itself isn’t included.

I’d suggest immunisation but i don’t know the cause so can’t recommend a guaranteed cure.

I got an email that Avid (a professional editing system) has a 7-part series called Inside Abbey Road Studios. You can sign up to view it here. Not about the Beatles but Beatles-related and they mention using some of the same gear to this day.

Parlance, cool that NEW is up for a cover art award. Words Of Love video is great.

A major department store in New York has Ringo’s original drum kit from the Shea Stadium concert. They also have a dedicated Beatle area.

I’ll see if Photobucket is in a cooperative mood today.

Today is the 50th anniversary of the first American TV broadcast concerning the Beatles.

http://dailynightly.nbcnews.co…..ision?lite

Yes, the critics viewed them with something between bemusement and contempt, and their hair was seen as ridiculous. Honestly, had I been a parent back then I’m not sure I would have felt differently. I know how I’ve reacted to the Spice Girls, Britney Spears, etc… despite my attempts not to be like my own parents!
