Apoligies if posted elsewhere or earlier here: Ramming – The Making of Ram documentary

@Funny Paper, mmm and I are both very thankful for your efforts to look through all the topic titles to find out if a thread for RAM already existed. The RAM remastered thread had turned into a conversation about the songs, the album itself, and issues surrounding the album rather than just about the remaster. The video you started your thread with was posted by mmm just a few months ago in the RAM remastered thread. To keep the conversation together, we decided to merge the two threads. I changed the topic/thread title to Ram to better reflect the contents of the thread. I am about to make a note in post 1 to reflect the re-purposing of the thread. @Joe, will you please update the URL for this thread? I discovered that the 3-letter restriction on searching is gone. I did a search for the topic title “ram” and it worked. @meanmistermustard and I will do a little more investigation to see if the other threads on RAM need to be brought together. EDIT: I pulled together the two threads about the Ram mono mix. That conversation can be found here.

Funny Paper, meanmistermustard and I didn’t take this merge lightly knowing the considerable effort you put into searching before creating a thread. I hope you aren’t too mad at us.

Ram on.

One of his best post-Beatles albums for sure. I’ll just do what Kite did and go through the tracks, though I’m going to be nicer in general…

Just trying to be more critical than I usually am! a-hard-days-night-george-10
After listening through again (and to some songs many, MANY times,) I’ve come to respect the ones I was critical of a bit more.

Uncle Albert /Admiral Halsey  – Everyone knows this one. This song remains his biggest radio hit, at least in America (not including his Wings hits). The first half or so, Uncle Albert , is a mellow, apologetic tune to… an uncle, I guess. Then the other part, Admiral Halsey , is a jaunty song led by horns and goofy lyrics. My favorite part is the part about the butter pie for sure.

After the horn intro, that’s my favorite too.

Smile Away – Quite an interesting side closer. It’s a somewhat long song from Paul, basically repeating the same thing throughout the course of its time. Despite this, I love the song. As usual, the singing is great, the lyrics are once again goofy, and the buzzing bass (which I thought was a problem with the CD at first) is an unexpected sound.

I only noticed that bass buzz on the third time I heard the song, towards the end. Fits well if you don’t pay attention to it, but it’s kind of distracting if you focus on it.

Monkberry Moon Delight – One of my all-time favorite solo McCartney songs. Absolutely ridiculous lyrics, but they’re a big part of how fun the song is. The whole thing has a kind of insane sound, with a snarling vocal from Paul spitting nonsense, with Linda echoing some of the nonsense over a heavy piano chord. Slightly reverby vocals and a slick guitar sound give it an almost psychedelic undertone. And then during the long fade-out, Paul screams “Monkberry Moon Delight !” in a variety of ways. Endless fun to listen to, and of course it’s got a very catchy melody.

When reading about it, I found out that the backing it actually Linda and Heather, her daughter. Found that interesting, and explains why it’s kind of high, a quality I love about the back up vocals in MMD.

Long Haired Lady – A beautiful, very long song that kind of suffers from slightly flat lead singing from Linda in parts, but overall quite an epic song. Excellent despite the little parts where she doesn’t quite hit the low notes.

Although I’m pretty sure she’s trying to sound like that there, it still does take away from the song, but in comparison makes Paul’s singing even nicer.

I really like ‘Long Haired Lady’, i love the ‘whose the lady…’ sections, the tune is so soft, gentle and embracing and all the little bits that Paul put together i find work incredibly well. ‘Uncle Albert /Admiral Halsey ‘ normally gets the attention as the track with all the different parts stitched together but ‘LHL’ is just as good in my eyes.

@Mr. Kite, this post is coming up blank for me, not sure if its a display error or not but if it is blank can i delete it?

@meanmistermustard I forgot to ask, please delete it, it was just the same thing I posted above.

As to LHL, I love the change after he says “my long haired lady” The chord there and atmosphere after are great.

I should probably rereview the few songs I skipped over.

Yeah, I’ve played along with my acoustic guitar to that song a lot — and that chord you mention (I think of that moment as “dreamy”) is an interesting Ebmaj7 (interesting because of the other chords in the song) — then going radically back to G major.

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8 Exactly!

Dreamy is a perfect way to describe it, along with the vocal effect there, that chord really creates that feel. It feels like the perfect chord for the spot but does contrast with what’s around it, which is why it’s so interesting.

I feel like he should’ve continued it differently though, that there are other chords that could go after that that would keep the tension, if you get what I mean. I’ll have to learn it on guitar and then play around with it.

Mr. Kite, I kind of like it the way Paul did it; but one possibility to extend that dreamy quality to another chord before resolving back to G would be to go to Abma7 after the Ebma7, repeating the lilting vocal melody but about a 4th or 5th higher — then going from the Abma7 back to G.  And actually, there would be no reason why he couldn’t have done both, since he does that part I think at least twice in the song, so the 2nd (or 3rd) time could add the extra chord, but not the 1st time.

Well, I like how he did it too, I just meant in my mind I heard a different ending of that part.

I’ll try what you said later.

From page 220 of Graeme Thomson’s excellent George biography ‘Behind The Locked Door’:

Harrison was always happy to play with Starr and Lennon – tho its notable that the latter never once returned the favour. His attitude to McCartney’s music was less generous. “I was at Friar Park when George received ‘Another Day ‘ as a demo from Paul,” says Bobby Whitlock. “We were sitting in the gatehouse, sitting in the dining room having a Scotch and green ginger, and the post came. George opened it up and put on the acetate, didn’t tell me who it was or anything. I went “What the hell is that?” And he said, “it’s Paul”, and kinda laughed.”.

Mr. Kite, I finally dug out my Ram songbook which I purchased decades ago and looked up the chords to that part of the song (Long Haired Lady) — after decades I only finally nailed them down this morning!  Anyway, it’s a cool chord sequence:

from G:

“Well, I’ve been

D7

“meaning to talk to you a-

C7

“-bout it for some

A7/Bb

“time…

Cm

“sweet little

Dm

“lass you

Ebma7

“are……………..   my long haired

G

“lady.”

(I like to make that Cm and Dm into seventh chords myself, but the book just has them straight.  I tried to monkey around with adding an Abma7 after the Ebmaj7, but couldn’t figure out a melody that would work well.)

I agree, WhereArtEsteban — “Too Many People ” is a superb rock song, it easily stands in the pantheon not only of McCartney’s best rock songs, but I’d say of rock songs of all time.  I don’t know why it remains so obscure.

Same here.  There was no love for Macca when he released Ram paul-mccartneyhttp://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk38/rickdelsie/The%20Beatles/parlunread_zps28270d9d.gif

Ram On is a haunting song – one of my favourites when I’m in that mood – but this album does not do it for me. Maybe because it’s talked about so much as a fantastic album, an overlooked masterpiece, that my contrarian streak means I can’t enjoy it. And if you love it, rock on – or, Ram On – whatever you choose.

At the beginning of Too Many People , the John and Yoko song, Paul sings “Piss off, yeah.” I had never heard that before.

Something else I learned recently is that there is a picture of two beetles screwing each other on the cover (the reference is obvious).
