Note by Ahhh Girl 30 August 2014: Posts 1-7 originally were a threaded titled "RAM mono edition. Does anyone heard it ?". Since the two thread are both about the Ram mono mix, I brought them together.

I found a RAM mono edition in ebay. Is it an official release ?

The only "official version" is the 180g vinyl with the plain soiled cover.  It was issued at the same time as the CD and deluxe reissues last year.

I have it, and the differences are mostly fairly subtle.  There's nothing that will blown your mind.  A few different fades, edits and vocal effects mostly.

I'm not sure if I'm right here, but wasn't there a mono Ram first time around? I know I had a mono Ram back in the '80s, bought in a secondhand record shop. And I recall when the Deluxe was released, one of the lines was that it was the first time on CD for the mono mix, not the first time the mono mix had been released.

Yes you're correct. The only mono release was originally in 1971 until the reissue.

Glad to hear that the vinyl I bought back in the 80s, and is still buried somewhere in my boxes of vinyl, wasn't a bootleg.

The mono version was a radio-only promo, so it's ridiculously rare if it's real.  Any commercial releases were only in stereo.  Many bootlegs do exist.

My copy is buried away in my boxes of vinyl, but I'm a bit OCD and have everything cataloged. It was bought in Beanos in Croydon (once the largest secondhand record store in Europe, now sadly gone) on 13 October 1987. It cost me £65 (which was a hell of a lot then!), and I have written in brackets after the price, promo. The catalogue number I have is Apple MAS-3375.

I think I've made it clear on here my love for the mono mixes of the Beatles' albums, as well as my near-obsession with RAM, but the mono mix of RAM is just fantastic. Anyone else here prefer it to the stereo?

I don't notice much difference between the stereo and mono mix. Just some minor differences. Not like the 'White Album' or 'Sgt. Peppers'. I to also love mono mixes of songs especially if they were intended to be in mono which is most of the songs from the 1960's.

I agree there aren't nearly as many differences between the 2 mixes of RAM as there are in the Beatles' albums, but some of the cross-fades are a bit smoother and the bass and backing vocals are more upfront in mono...it just breathes a bit better, in my opinion. You can't go wrong either way, though...it's RAM! :D

Totally agree over Ram. I find the mono a less heavy listen compared to the stereo if that makes sense. I suppose I agree with Dr Beatle saying that it breathes a bit better.

Does anyone have a needle drop of RAM's mono mix? I am very eager to listen.

Found one in Mono, I 16/44, I want a 24/96 so I can really compare the mixes. The one I got sounds muddier, but Mono could indeed sound better in the long run.

I have copies of both on vinyl, and while there are some differences I haven't found them noticeable enough to declare a personal "clear winner" between the two.  Nice that RAM is getting this kind of love though...

I'm resurrecting this thread I started last summer since this week is the 43rd anniversary of RAM's release. Cranking this mono mix through headphones at the moment and it's still as perfect as it's always been.

I'm not a huge fan of Ram (kind of a stupid album for me, with a little bit of catchiness here and there, but that's for another thread), but I'd be interested to hear the mono mix. I can't find it anywhere.

Its in the ultimate deluxe remastered archive box where you have to also buy a book, the double cd, lots of bits of paper and Thrillington to get it. Or hunt for it on a torrent site.

It really rankled me when i discovered that you had to spend around £70 to get all the music.blue-meanie

You can also find it on YouTube. If you don't like the album, there may not be a point in seeking it out, but if you think it's as great as I do, then it's worth the time and effort as I think it's the superior mix in multiple ways. Really weird that Paul even decided to mix it in mono in '71, albeit only for radio stations.
