Love the song, but really dislike the music video. Like he’s playing it in the studio and a bunch of famous people come and dance to it? I just really don’t understand, like why? Also, Paul is wearing sandals, and that makes it even worse.
Maybe he was trying to make a reference to Abbey Road *the record*.
I actually didn’t notice the sandals until you pointed it out.

On one level, the video is about people responding/dancing to the song after it’s been released, which is why Paul doesn’t notice them. On the other, I think the lyrics are about the fleeting, often vicious, nature of celebrity, and that’s why they’re now-you-see-them-now-you-don’t. O-U-T spells out.
I like the idea on paper, but something’s kind of missing from the execution. Maybe it needed a more surreal touch to make the point more plain, I don’t know. But, yes, it does just look like a bunch of partying celebrities, and on that level, it’s boring.
And I agree, no to the Birkenstocks. The close-ups just make it painfully clear Paul has hobbit feet, which I could have died happily without knowing.

Offline I’m a child of the 80s so I love music videos. And I’ve mentioned elsewhere I believe it was the Beatles cartoon that’s responsible for my eternally tying music to images.

I like them – it’s kind of a dialogue. I have my mental images and I get to see another interpretation to compare mine to.
The best of them are also awesome short films in their own right (cue my admiration for “This One” yet again).
I must have over a hundred music DVDs sitting on the shelves, a mix of concerts and video clips.

Same here (on both counts…child of 80s and music videos). And mja, I agree, those clips are great!
As for this video, it’s *ok* but I don’t think the point that he can’t see them is made explicit enough that one who isn’t already a hardcore fan who has discusses this on the messageboards before it was released would necessarily “get” the concept.

Offline I don’t get the concept of why he doesn’t see all the folk in the studio. Regardless of who you are you’re going to notice a woman lying on the piano you’re playing and where do they come from and where do they go after he stops, they just vanish.

Because otherwise it would be rude for Johnny Depp in real space to be listening to an ipod while Sir Paul’s right there playing the piano. But then we see Johnny singing the words. So I think it’s meant to be a representation of present and future in the same frame, but again, the execution could have been better.

Ah, ok. Would never have gotten that from the video. So it’s some kind of weird apparition video where folks from the future appear from nowhere and then vanish.
Does that have any connection to the song content or is it meant to be an artsy type thing?

I think connected to the lyrics in that, as I mentioned, the song’s about the ephemeral nature of celebrity – now you’re in, next you’re out.
It really could have been done much better.

Offline I think we’re over thinking this. McCartney’s always been into surrealism. The green Beatle apple is the guy’s head in the Magritte painting. There’s no explaining surrealism other than it being thought provoking. (Remember the Beatles running along their own train in A Hard Day’s Night ?)

Sometimes I wish music videos were a bit more literal. When a song tells a story, why should a video tells a completely different one? Personally I’d have loved Queenie Eye to contain some nostalgia – they could even have used the celebs, but had them dressed as 1950s kids playing games. Has anyone seen Dennis Potter’s TV play Blue Remembered Hills? That did something similar and worked very well.
