Only Mamma Knows” came up randomly on my iPod.

It’s better than what I seem to remember.

It’s got the classical music “drop” at the beginning and then the “anti-drop” at the end.

The classical instruments play variations of the various melodies in the song, there are changes in tempos, some good riffs – very McCartney-esque.

If you heard it for the first time without knowing what album it was off, could you guess? Could you guess what decade?

I’ve never been a massive fan of that song, ITSWD- but I agree that bar the sweeping classical portions, it certainly emulates the hard-rocking, mullet-sporting, bass-strumming McCartney of ’72-’77.

Recently I’ve been very fond of “(I Want To) Come Home”, “Too Much Rain ” and “End of the End.” I think Paul’s recent forays into wistful piano balladeering have been really mature and moving lyrically and musically.

I agree completely – especially “Too Much Rain ” and the whole Chaos and Creation album.

My version of “who’s on first”:

-What Paul’s song do you like?

-I like this one.

-which one?

-This one…

-what? are you mad? tell me which one!

-THIS ONE, you moron! THIS ONE!

1989, single of Flowers In The Dirt . You know, that one…

That actually happened to me on Christmas.
my mom: What did your aunt send you?

me: Sheet music.

mm: For what?

me: Something .

mm: Yeah, what?

me: Something .

On topic: Zoo Gang

I just learned tonight that Paul wrote a theme song for a cheesy 1974 TV spy show called The Zoo Gang.  The theme music he wrote is suitably cheesy too:

I really want to like “Too Much Rain “, but it tears me up inside. I think depression is harder to overcome than the smile-and-be-happy remedy he proffers in this song.

“At the Mercy”. When he sings “At the mercy of a busy day/I can think of nothing more to say”, it makes me want to sing “Someday when we’re dreaming,/Deep in love, not a lot to say. / Then we will remember/Things We Said Today .”

It is. And that’s the exact reason I’ve only listened to it once or twice. I’ll never go to it.

I’ve been listening to ‘Let ‘Em In’ loads recently. It’s one of those songs I can’t help but nod along to.

Moving along in our God given ways, safety is sat by the fire/Sanctuary from these feverish smiles, left with a mark on the door.

It’s not a favorite of mine, but I see it as less “smile-and-be-happy,” more “sometimes you have to smile even when you feel like crying, and it’s really hard, but that’s life.”

I’ll try to listen to it that way and see what happens. The way it ends so abruptly makes me think he wishes he could say more to help, but he realizes that what he is saying isn’t getting through to the person he is saying/singing it to. It’s like his words fail him.

As a musician myself, I often may have a different style of listening to the songs I like than a “normal” fan.  Most of the time, I don’t just put on a McCartney song to listen to, but specifically in order to play along with on my acoustic guitar.  If it weren’t for this hobby of mine, I’d probably not get around to listening to them at all.

The songs I like doing this with are mostly all the songs on Ram (but not including “Ram On ” because the tuning is slightly off on the record, and it’s a pain to have to retune my strings twice just for that song) — with special pleasure on “3 Legs “, “Uncle Albert ” and “Heart Of The Country “.  Also on Wild Life I love to play very simple bass strings on “Mumbo”, and then “Bip Bop” is a great song for improvising little guitar licks all over the place.  “Some People Never Know” is very satisfying to play along with those nice chord changes.  I don’t much care for playing along to most of the others, but I do like them.  Red Rose Speedway is a blast — I basically play along to every song (except the very boring “Loup (1st Indian on the Moon)); and Band On The Run , exquisite!

Woops, I forgot to mention McCartney (I): only a few songs grab my guitar-picking fancy:

Sun (not the “Glasses” second half!)

Man We Was Lonely

Every Night

Lovely Linda

(I’d like to play along to “Junk” and “Teddy Boy ” but the tuning seems off there, like with “Ram On “, though sometimes I take the trouble to adjust my strings just for a special session)

Faded flowers, wait in a jar, till the evening is complete... complete... complete... complete...

Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five is epic. I can’t stop listening to it at the moment. I had it on my walkman (God , I’m behind the times and I’m only 30!) on the way home from work today and I kept smiling like a loon and had to stop myself from doing a little dance down the street. And I love how it goes into Band On The Run at the end! Also into Ram lately, that album was apparently panned at the time and I really don’t see why. It’s raw Paul at his best, bluesy, funky, sweet, gorgeous!

Ram – which is surprising as its not an album i regularly go to yet have listened to it twice in 4 days – which is surprising as its not something i normally do for any album.

I have been listening to “Somedays” from Flaming Pie a shit-ton lately.  Ugh, such a beautiful song.

"Please don't bring your banjo back, I know where it's been..  I wasn't hardly gone a day, when it became the scene..  Banjos!  Banjos!  All the time, I can't forget that tune..  and if I ever see another banjo, I'm going out and buy a big balloon!"

Yeah, I’m in full Sing the Changes mode. It’s been in my head for two days now.

“Sing the Changes” finally got replaced in my head with “Beautiful Night.” Unfortunately, I keep wanting to say, “Paul, I’ve been to Versailles, and I can assure you there are no castles there. They have one kick-ass former palace to show off to tourists, but no castles.” Minor quibble. Love the song anyway.

Now I can’t even remember the tune of Sing the Changes, and Calico Skies is now firmly lodged in my brain. Funny how things turn around.

Now it’s Jet and Let Me Roll It . And Sing the Changes is back. It just doesn’t go away.

I’ve been learning Jet on bass, so I’m playing it a lot. And listening to it a lot. No complaints though, it’s fantastic.
