There were so many bands about and drummers were a rare commodity at any time as they had to carry their drums about to the gigs. They would have known Pete from Mona's club so it probably says more that they advertised instead of accepting him immediately – especially if he wasnt part of a band. Unless he was committed to being the house drummer.

It shows that they were casting around at the time looking for someone to go with them to Hamburg, and suggests there may have been other people approached. Plus it's a bit of a mystery, not knowing who McCartney was writing to.

Also, the letter was discovered by accident, folded up in a book. So there's a double mystery. Presumably whoever sold it had no idea it was there. Bet they're kicking themselves now.

Is it that much of a news story? The Beatles needed a drummer and Pete turned out to be the best available at that moment so they could go to Hamburg, which we already knew. So apart from Paul responding to an advert and refering to the band as 'beatles' in 1960.

I think i'll keep my £7,000 for another day.
