OfflineIs it that much of a news story? The Beatles needed a drummer and Pete turned out to be the best available at that moment so they could go to Hamburg, which we already knew. So apart from Paul responding to an advert and refering to the band as 'beatles' in 1960.
I think i'll keep my £7,000 for another day.
It's fairly big because the date of the letter was the same date The Beatles auditioned Pete Best. It shows that they were casting around at the time looking for someone to go with them to Hamburg, and suggests there may have been other people approached. Plus it's a bit of a mystery, not knowing who McCartney was writing to.
Also, the letter was discovered by accident, folded up in a book. So there's a double mystery. Presumably whoever sold it had no idea it was there. Bet they're kicking themselves now.
I've put the letter in the history section for 12 August 1960, the date it was written: http://www.beatlesbible.com/19…..y-drummer/

OfflineSo if the letter was written the same day Pete Best was auditoned… the question is did they like Pete Best since the beginning or they were looking someone else?
Thanks for the apples! I know it was a terrible pun

OfflineI still believe they were going to Hamburg, desperately needed a drummer and knew Pete was available. There were so many bands about and drummers were a rare commodity at any time as they had to carry their drums about to the gigs. They would have known Pete from Mona's club so it probably says more that they advertised instead of accepting him immediately – especially if he wasnt part of a band. Unless he was committed to being the house drummer.
Edit. Beatles Examiner has posted a new article with fresh info. Pete had been in a band but they had split up, so my comments above are wrong. The Beatles also had had a drummer but he had recently quit, something that regularly happened with Beatle drummers.
