A main reason why I love the christmas time so much. Still I think those two christmas songs are the greatest.

Yeah a anti-drug song by paul is a bit funny, even more funny is that jimmy mcculloch (the second lead guitarist of the wings, and imo the best guitarist of all time) wrote two songs for the wings, both anti-drug songs. He later died because of a heroin overdose. And geoff britton even ...

Be interesting to see if RRS is indeed expanded to it's double LP length. (Hey, I'd give it the benefit of doubt and buy it!) Really though, I suspect that the best of RRS and WWL together would make a single fairly solid single LP. (Just IMO.)

(Curious how the man could release two of his weakest albums of the decade in between his two best...)

The majority of stuff I've heard which was feted for the double-LP Speedway is pretty good, a lot of errs on the side of hard rock and prog rock ("Jazz Street", "Night Out") but there are of course some beautiful ballads too ("Tragedy", "Mama's Little Girl"). I think Speedway would have been better received in its original double incarnation- I like the medley but it did seem a bit of an easy cop out to round off the record.

There are tons of little obscure Macca gems that I love and wish had been on albums. A Love For You, from the Ram sessions, is amazing and should have been on the record, contains one of his best vocal performances too. I'm also a big fan of Cage, which would have been very welcome as a replacement for the poorer songs on Back to the Egg. Then there's the beautiful sitar-laden Tragedy, and 1882, which started off as a nice little melancholic piano waltz but was turned into a rock song for Wings '72 tour, didn't really work.

I expect that a lot of the "Wonderful Christmastime" hate comes from folks who can't stand Xmas music in general, can't stand hearing the same songs 1000 times each December - a sentiment I can totally sympathize with - for 30+ years. I've always thought it was really cool, the way it bounces and burbles along. Not quite as good as Stevie Wonder's similar synthesized funk (like "Higher Gound" or "Boogie On Reggae Woman"), but that's what it reminds me of, all the same. I guess it is a bit repetitive, as far as that goes.

Not totally on topic, but I was surprised to just recently learn that "Wonderful Christmas Time" never charted in the USA. Which is a surprise because I remember it being a big hit here in Canada. Usually it's only songs by Canadian performers that chart here but not south of the border.

Also, does "Girls' School" (b-side of "Mull of Kintyre") show up anywhere?

And I don't really see why to feel guilty about it - how many deep personal meanings can you put into a Xmas song?! ...
