I have some questions about the song “Band On The Run .”

Is it true that for the Red Square performance of this song, that the first two parts of the song are omitted? 'Cos that's all I can find on YouTube at the moment, are the short 3-minute versions (going straight to the third part).

I also want to know whether or not the first two parts of this song were omitted from other live performances of this song?

And now, on to the synthesizer solos. Here is a demo of them being performed on a Moog Rogue synthesizer (the Minimoog was the original one).

Thank you,

First, I saw him last year, and he had all 3 parts when I saw him (and also on Good Evening NYC), so he must have segued from something else. He was sick when the tour occurred, so it is possible he couldn't sing those first two parts. I think Zig has the concert in question on his DVR, so I ask him to watch this again. I think it was the illness that caused a segue.

I don’t have any info on whether he truncated the song in Red Square, but Wings used to perform the whole thing – as does McCartney still. Here’s what I found out:

BOTR was the first song in the ‘Band electric set’ part of the concert (see Setlist.fm listing). That suggests it wasn’t a segue from another song.

I suspect the YouTube clips are taken from the DVD, which mixed behind-the-scenes and other footage with shots from the concert. I’ve not seen it but apparently quite a few of the songs were truncated.

“Although you don’t get full songs in any of the Red Square concert, here’s the song list: Getting Better , Band On The Run , Can’t Buy Me Love …”

Didn’t realise that ‘Band On The Run ‘ was inspired by a quote from George.

In a 1973 interview with Paul Gambaccini, McCartney stated that the lyric “if we ever get out of here” was inspired by a remark made by George Harrison  during one of the Beatles’ many business meetings. McCartney recalled: “He was saying that we were all prisoners in some way [due to the ongoing problems with their company Apple] … I thought it would be a nice way to start an album.” McCartney added, referring to his inspiration for “Band On The Run “: “It’s a million things … all put together. Band On The Run – escaping, freedom, criminals. You name it, it’s there.”

Have this on my iPod. For me, it’s as good as the album cut if not better.

Don’t know if anyone else has either noticed or mentioned this before, but doesn’t the guitar part Dave Gilmour plays after the “shine on you crazy diamond” bit is sung sound a bit like a certain guitar part played on Band On The Run ….or am I going slightly mad?  mccartney-shrug_01_gif

I think I know which ones you’re talking about, @Vera Chuckandave; they do have a melodic similarity. They’re not altogether unusual sets of notes to use in a bluesy kind of mode.
