I am very happy to have been reintroduced to this album. I had forgotten how good it really is.

Smile Away ” is one of my favorites – not for the less than brilliant lyrics, mind you. It’s just so freakin’ fun.

To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

vonbontee said, “Never would’ve thought anybody had a problem with “Eat At Home “. Really, the only parts of the album I don’t like are the second “Ram On ” and most of “Long Haired Lady” (especially Linda’s lead vocal spotlight bits.) Oh, and the spoken-telephone recitation in “Uncle Albert ” is kinda irritating.”

I don’t think it’s so much a problem as the fact that I’m not going to appreciate a song I think I could write myself. (I have the same criteria for art); and no, I don’t have a high opinion of my songwriting abilities.

I do agree completely about Linda’s vocals; she appears to have been a classy lady and she’s passed on, so I hate to say anything disrespectful, but really IMO the more prominent her voice the more it detracts from the song. I think it comes off childish, and that’s only going to work on a small number of McCartney songs.

I also agree with the spoken-telephone recitation. Totally boring. That song simply takes way too long to get going.

As for the second “Ram On ,” as it fades out I love hearing the beginning of “Big Barn Bed” from Red Rose Speedway released, what, two years later?

I’ve got to give “Big Barn Red” another listen. Exactly what songs from “Red Rose Speedway ” and “Wild Life ” were outtakes from the “Ram ” sessions anyways? Good ones? Could “Ram ” have made as great a double album as “All Things Must Pass “? (A great DOUBLE album by George, most folks agree!)

Partial list: Dear Friend (off Wild Life ), Little Woman Love (Mary Had A Little Lamb’s B-side), and Get On The Right Thing, Big Barn Red and Little Lamb Dragonfly (off Red Rose Speedway ). There’s more, but that’s the quick list.

Thanks Mr. SKCT!
Have to give those some listening attention, see if I don’t prefer them in an imagined alternate context.
“Dear Friend”, that’s a good one. Guess Paul didn’t want an album with two “Dear…” songs.

I really wish they’d put out more than 1 or 2 of these per year.  ahdn_paul_01  Obviously a lot of work goes into creating the deluxe packages, but surely they’ve been working on these since they were first announced a few years ago… right?  a-hard-days-night-paul-4  And they’re obviously releasing his more popular/acclaimed albums first (though why Tug Of War wasn’t included in the initial grouping, I don’t know  : ?).  So what’ll it be next year – Venus And Mars , Wings At The Speed Of Sound or Wings Over America (or hopefully the former two at once)?

According to the bit of paper which comes with the other reissues, those three are next in line. So my guess is they’ll come out in chronological order, or maybe all three at once. I think they need to start grouping the releases, otherwise it’ll be about a decade before they get to the end, and nobody will have CD players anymore.

No WAY am I getting rid of my CD player! I’ll buy up all the cheap used CDs once people get rid of ’em.

I’m wondering how long the reissue program lasts. “Tug Of War “? “Flowers In The Dirt “? There aren’t too many that I really need, fortunately. (An EXPANDED “Wings Over America “?!)

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

I want all of them because I am a newer fan. I have a lot of vinyl, and EVERYTHING on digital, but I want shiny. new. things.

I’ll go with the double-disc versions on a one-by-one basis myself, based on what the second discs offer. Uncollected bonus tracks entice me – live/alternate versions of the familiar songs, don’t.

Looks likely that this project will come to an end when Paul turns 100 and receives his text from Queen Beatrice.

I was really hoping they would have the next one released by Christmastime this year, because if not I won’t have anything too exciting to ask for. Yeah, I know Christmas isn’t about the presents, but I think presents make Christmas a little better and a little more exciting(even the bad ones).
Oh well. Doing it as slow as it has been going makes it easier to save money for it anyways. paul-mccartney

Was listening to Johns stint as a DJ on Super Star Week in September ’74 and was delighted to hear him play Jet and then say that he wanted to play Monkberry Moon Delight instead but it ran too long.a-hard-days-night-john-5

Wow! Shows the difference a few years can make, huh? It still slightly bugs me that the biggest compliment people can pay Paul’s music is that John liked it, so it must be good. Or criticism: John hated it, so it must be awful.

Not directed at you, by the way. It just made me think of that.

I don’t mean to offend anyone here, but really, for the most part, John had horrible taste in music. Half the songs he calls shit in 1980 are personal favorites. He doesn’t have the best taste in music – I mean he liked The B-52′!a-hard-days-night-george-10

About Ram – Until this recent spree of love for Monkberry Moon Delight , I hadn’t noticed how awesome he sings this song.

Well, I wouldn’t exactly say John had horrible taste in music. I think he probably just eclectic taste. I mean, his love of 50s rock and r & b are why we are all here talking about The Beatles still.

Seconded on Monkberry Moon Delight .

Comparing The B-52’s to Yoko’s music (which is what John was doing as well as singing their praises) is quite clever because both are dreadful (apart from Love Shack which is listenable at times). Can not stand Rock Lobster and they ruined The Flinstones theme.

Frankly, I’ve always thought John went soft in his solo years.  His own music seemed less edgy and less interesting for the most part.  I honestly consider John Lennon /Plastic Ono Band the most overrated solo Beatles album.  Seems to me no longer directly (or even indirectly) collaborating with Paul affected him a bit.

Well, he maybe went a little soft after a few years, and he became as schmaltzy as others accuse Paul of being, but Plastic Ono Band is pretty far from that. I don’t really like to listen to it because it is so heavy, but it was unusual for an album at that time to be so self-confessing. I think that’s why it is considered so great. It sort of bred a whole confessional rock following. Which is alright if you like that sort of thing…I think it’s a brilliant album that I just don’t listen to a lot. But songs like Steel And Glass and How Do You Sleep? (much as I hate it) prove that John hadn’t gone completely soft, in spite of songs like Oh Yoko!

John did say that Imagine was POB with sugar sprinkled on (or words similar). By ’73/’74 he wasnt that interested (if you believe what John said). I do and i i think it shows, especially on Mind Games (the lp) which is even more polished. Even Walls And Bridges is missing some balls, the production tries to bring it in but just ends up making it sound clunky and cluttered.

I dont know, i always think of Johns solo career as being amazing but when i get down to it and take all the great tracks im left with between 2 and 3 albums and one of those is POB in its entirety. But he only released, what, 7 when alive so maybe thats being too critical.

How did we get from Ram to this?
