Is the song Early Days about The Beatles?

Dressed in black from head to toe
Two guitars across our backs
We would walk the city roads
Seeking someone who would listen to the music
That we wear writing down at home.

Two guitars across our backs

Paul means; himself and John?

It’s so sad.a-hard-days-night-john-2

Yes, the early days of Paul and John. Two guys with big dreams, big talent, and big egos. Glad they made it big. The world is a better place because they were so determined to share their music with all of us.

Yep. In particular that set of lines reminds me of reading about the time they busked for a summer and worked at Paul’s cousin’s pub (the “Nerk Twin” gigs).

How do you interpret these lines from “On My Way to Work?”

“How could I have so many dreams?
And one of them not come true”

Do you think he is saying, “I have so many dreams, and I think one of them should come true”, or “I have so many dreams, and I think they all should come true?”

I interpreted it as the former.

I FINALLY have this! Wow, it is truly amazing. I expected good things having read all the positive reviews but I didn’t think it would be this wonderful. I especially love Save Us, Alligator, Appreciate and Looking at her.

The album is a real mix between being a love letter to Nancy and looking back at his life and career. It all sounds so fresh and relevant. Paul has had his share of duff tunes in the past but I can honestly say I adore each and every track. Yes, his voice isn’t what it once was but he’s 71 years old (and all the pot he has smoked through the years can’t have helped!) But I don’t think that matters when the songs are this good, especially on Early Days and On My Way To Work which is an older man looking back on his youth. The aged quality in his voice enhances the words he’s singing.

Well done Paulie a-hard-days-night-paul-5 the critics try to write you off then you come back at them stronger than ever and prove what all Beatles fans have always known. You are a musical genius and probably the best living songwriter in the world.

When I was listening to Alligator today and heard “dare to find my key,” I thought of him talking about the key he is playing and singing in.

Oooh, nice one! The fact that it’s on a really high note would seem to support the double meaning. Thanks; that helps me not be so irritated that the lyric isn’t “turn the key” instead. :)

I love “Alligator” and “Queenie Eye ,” I like “Appreciate” and “Get Me Out of Here” quite a bit, and I think “Early Days ” is one of his best solo songs ever, full stop. I think I’ve already rhapsodized about it in this thread, so I’ll keep it short, but: It is just so poignant. I get a little weepy every time. The melody isn’t even all that amazing, but those lyrics, and that voice! This is how Paul should sing every single one of his acoustic ballads from now on. I want a million more songs sung and recorded like this.

Overall I don’t think New is even close to being his best album, though it might be “stronger” in the sense of having fewer duff tracks than many or most of them.

We get by with a little help from our friends.

If anyone could reach alien life somewhere out in the universe with a message from Earth, it might just be Paul with the ending sounds of “Everybody Out There.”

When I hear

“It taught me when you find a love
Don’t break it, try to make it whole”

from Turned Out, I think of this part of Too Many People

“Too many waiting for that lucky break.

That was your first mistake,
You took your lucky break and broke it in two.
Now what can be done for you?
You broke it in two.”

EDIT:I’ve played a few songs from the album for mom. She thinks Hosanna is beautiful and Get Me Out Of Here is funny.

I don’t have all the songs, but I’ve heard all of them, and my favorites are probably New, Queenie Eye , and Turned Out. I also like Save Us.

I realized today that a part of Baby, You’re a Rich Man will be forever mixed up in my mind with the “key” verse in Alligator.

“Now that you’ve found another key
What are you going to play?”

Heh. I love the “Rich Man” lyrics. Especially that “tuned to a natural E” can be heard as “tuned too unnaturally.”

Paul, I was just listening to some versions of Free As A Bird by your friend John. It made me think of your new song Scared. The two songs have some similar-sounding qualities. And in your song you sing that you are trying to set the beautiful birds/words free from your mouth. I’m glad you plucked up the courage to let those beautiful birds wing their way to Nancy’s ears and heart. And, I’m sure glad she let them land gently and safely in her soul.

@acmac I thought about this conversation when I heard Ringo sing this lyric in “Everyone Wins”

Harmony is fine but after a time, well the key must change.

It is from :42 to :49 in this video

My kids (and I, of course!) love this album…the song “New” in particular is a real favorite of theirs.

For me, I love it all, and Alligator is a great song. Hard for me to not relate to the line “everybody else is busy doing better than me,” as that’s basically been the mindset of my life the last several years (no matter how hard I try to stop thinking that way).
