I'm also pretty new to iTunes in general, so any advice would be appreciated.
Use a different music player. iTunes is second only to WMP in the amount of trouble it will cause you. Try winamp, MediaMonkey or Songbird, or even Spotify. Additionally, it is generally cheaper to purchase music from other sources.
I've got an iPod though, I just assumed iTunes would be the easiest way to upload stuff? And atm I'm just focussing on getting all of my CDs onto my laptop anyway, so it'll be a while before I have to worry about buying more music on-line.
About to download Spotify now though; the last time I tried you had to be invited by someone who paid for the Premium Spotify or something like that? But anyway, thanks for the help, I'll see how I get on.

Comments like are a bit odd without further explanation. I've been using iTunes since 2001 and have never had any trouble with it. I've never particularly enjoyed using Winamp or WMP, and don't particularly feel the need to investigate other players.
Spotify, if anything, is easy to use because it's so similar to the iTunes UI – songs laid out in a single window, filters for artists, genre etc, a search function that works, ability to create and reorder playlists. The recent bloatware in iTunes (eg Ping) I could do without, and in fact do so.
iTunes' UI is great. However, it is relatively resource heavy. I usually use Spotify to play music, which uses about 14MB of memory to stream and 16MB to play local files. iTunes typically uses 28MB. It also uses more of my CPU.
iTunes doesn't recognise when a song has been imported multiple times, so duplicates can happen, and need to be cleared up manually.
iTunes also has an annoying habit of rearranging music collections, including changing album art covers and putting your local files somewhere other music players won't look for them whilst converting them to unfriendly formats. This is my main bug bear, and what I see people complaining about the most.
When you first install iTunes, it installs three programs which automatically launch at startup unless you stop them doing so. This delays startup times.
The store is slow and loading times between screens are much longer than an equivalent webpage.

OfflineAs for Spotify- I think the invite gets you 6 months of Free, then you get the awful version that isn't worth happening for the rest of eternity. I have an Unlimited subscription. Whilst the customer appreciation is low, the service is fantastic, definitely worth £5 p/m (I'm guessing $6 p/m over there?).
I checked to see if I have any invites I could send to you lot for the Free service, but I don't.

I've downloaded Free Spotify without an invite, so maybe they've changed that now? Either that or I have the awful version.
Tbh though, I started importing with iTunes; to switch to Spotify I'd have to restore the iPod and sync it all again, and I'm currently uploading my 95th album and counting. If I'd have used Spotify from the start, it might have been worthwhile, but I can't be bothered with the hassle now. I'm pretty sure that for what I need it for, iTunes'll be fine.
(If I do regret this decision at any point, I will, of course, accept the chorus of "I told you so.")
And thanks for the help, everyone!

I think synching with iTunes is probably for the best. That is how the iPod is designed.
Maximise Spotify. What does it say at the top of the screen, in the centre? Spotify Free? You have six months of Spotify with adverts. Spotify Open? You have six months of limited Spotify (I think it is 20 hours p/m) with adverts. After the six months, you'll either need a new account, a subscription, or to only play songs five times ever again.

OfflineUm, no. I have Vista (I think – I'm pretty sure we never got XP), and ITunes has never had problems. My IPod has been idiotic, but never ITunes.
