OfflineOne of the things that makes The Beatles so very different from other bands is that their albums are not just a collection of songs, but rather they are musical snapshots of the relationship of four incredibly talented people whose indvidual talents were multplied by being combined with each other's talents.
That said, Let It Be has some great music, but even in it's discord it's where John, Paul, George and Ringo were relationally. Have you noticed you really can't like Beatles music without caring about the members of the band. It's all one in the same.
Ovreall I prefer LIB Naked – but both albums are great – they have music no one else in the world could have ever done.
By they way, the subtle genius to Don't Let Me Down is in Billy Preston's keyboard and George's guitar playing. When John does the lyrics "I guess nobody ever loved me like she does me" sections – listen as Billy and George play keyboard/guitar lines which have a Japanese scale/tesxture to them. Since the song is about Yoko – that is subtle genuis. Nobody does that.
I'd never have made that connection. Thanks for that. I also think one of the cleverest things about the song is how it switches from 4/4 to 5/4 in those "nobody ever loved me…" bits. Beatles songs had loads of odd bars with different time signatures (particularly on songs such as Two Of Us, Revolution/R1 and Good Morning Good Morning). It's often easy to overlook as the songs sound so natural. It's probably due to their ignorance of music theory and convention but still very cool.

That's an interesting thought, Joe. I've seen it written several times that Macca could not write music to save himself, so he would just play a song the way he wanted it to sound and others would transcribe it for him. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case for all of them. Maybe someone else here in the Forum has more insight on that.
In any case, I really enjoy hearing the many Beatles songs that feature odd time signatures.
As for this album, I really enjoy it. Since purchasing the Stereo Box Set over a year ago, I've been listening to LiB more than I had in the past. Even the tracks I enjoyed the least are growing on me more and more. I haven't heard …Naked yet - maybe someday out of curiosity.
One After 909 is actually in my top 10 Beatles favorites. However, I do prefer the Anthology version and wish they had released it on one of the first two albums.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, Let it roll for all its worth.

OfflineMy opinions don't differ greatly from the rest of y'alls – never could get behind "Windy Road", but everything else ranges from OK to excellent. Biggest problem: John's writer's block, resulting in a mere 2 1/2 (new) Lennon originals. I've always felt that the inclusion of "Dig It" and all those great Lennon ad-libs about pygmies and pot-smoking FBI members was deliberately done to give the illusion of a greater Lennon presence. (And I thought it worked, somewhat, which is why their removal from …Naked annoyed me so much.)
Another thing that annoyed me: The version of "Get Back". If they were gonna use the "Sweet Loretta Fart.." intro and the "I hope we passed the audition!" outro, why not use the ACTUAL rooftop recording (a perfectly fine performance) of the song itself? And was the removal of the spoken "high-heeled shoes and low-neck sweater" spoken bits supposed to fool listeners into thinking that it really WAS the rooftop recording, rather than simply the original single with a slightly different mix and the spoken bit excised? Come on!
(Actually, it just struck me now how unusual that "Get Back" situation is: A rare case of a full-length performance released as a single, with the shorter, edited version appearing on the album. In fact, I can only think of one other example at present, and strangely enough, it's got a Beatles connection! The album version of Billy Joel's "Sometimes A Fantasy" fades out at the 2:59 mark. But the single version raves on for a full four minutes, with a big crashing destructive finish, and Beatles-fan Joel yells out "I've got blisters on my blisters!")

These things would not have happened on Sir George's watch.

OfflineIn honour of You Dislikers of TLAWR, here is a parody:
The Long and Boring Song
The song that never ends,
It just goes on and on
the Ending seems so far away
Hurry up and End
Maybe Phil Spector
Ruined it, and maybe he did not
In many ways, it doesn't matter
The song is still damn long
Why did the song ever get released
It seems so tedious
The song is long and life is short
Sir Paul, why did this become
The Focal point of a lawsuit
That you would have anyways
Without this weak long song.
It seems the song is done,
Not a moment to soon,
I hoipe you feel the same relief
And Hope you Enjoyed this new tune!!!

Your posts here are confusing. Dissent wasn't used until you brought it up.
