Well I love all songs on help (except the cover songs) most of Rubber Soul, most of revolver, all of Sgt. Pepper, all of Magical Mystery Tour (except the last two songs, all of White Album, the four new songs on yellow submarine, all of Abbey Road, all of let it be, so I think yes

So why dont you like the first 4 albums and does it include the singles? There are some incredible songs on those albums.

They sound too much like "rock and roll" for his tastes.

Yeah i read the thread thanks. Just a-wondering not a-criticising. Far better to be honest than to hum, ha and hee.

Now, here's a question I'm not even sure I know the answer to: If George Martin had done the album, and it had come out (exactly as Let It Be was released) except without the animosity and with Paul's blessing, would it be viewed better? In other words, how much of the dislike of this album is inherently hatred of Phil Spector?

Do you mean if GM had done "Let It Be" or "…Naked"?

Let It Be. Having it sound the exact same, but without the drama.

Difficult to say. 2 beatles didnt want to be there at all and Ringo was there for the sake of being there, they were rarely motivated and what we ended up with is pretty much the best there is. Also George Martin would never have produced TLAWR that way. The project was flawed started at Twickenham and the non-beatle working hours didnt help.

However a lighter atmosphere would have spread to the feel of the songs and probably improved it.

However im not the best person to answer since i like most of what Spector did.

Very good question sun king, but nobody can know the answer. Maybe people would still have thought the production was very bad. Or possibly the people would have loved it and said some songs even sound as though the great phil spector produced it. Or possibly people just wouldn't have said anything. The main thing is just that george martin wouldn't have produced the album in that way, and I think people would have liked it if george martin produced the album the way he used to do

If we have a go at Phil Spector for his 1970 production of TLAWR can we have a go at Paul and George Martin for the awful 1984 rerecording – terrible dated saxophone and keyboard thing going on there and i hate how Paul sings it so blandly. I know its 14 years later and it would be a modernising but they could easily have done it their way as intended in '69/70 instead we got that. Then again they screwed up all the other beatle rerecordings in Give My Regards as well – tho i think TLAWR is the only one they reworked.

Here is the 1984 rerecording for those who havent heard it. Make up your own minds.

Yeah, '83-'88 was really the only truly fallow period of Paul's recording career.  Everything he recorded during that period sounds VERY '80s today.  ahdn_paul_01

Damn, I remember back in '84, hearing that Paul had re-recorded all those old songs, thinking "WTF is he thinking? It's like he's begging for those bad reviews! Terrible idea." Unless maybe he was forced to re-do them for contract reasons (but the film ITSELF was still a terrible idea, say those who've seen it.)

GMRTB is on youtube – there are nice moments but overall it stinks (i ranted about it elsewhere on this thread).

Its a shame we wont get to hear some of the Twickenham stuff. Originally Two of Us was a rocker and its pretty cool, nowhere near as good as its final arrangement but still worthy of release. A fun listen and i think it would have been great to see the four rocking to this live on the Rooftop.

[Whilst looking for the video above found this - its Paul and John singing TOU in funny accents.]

I'm so glad you posted these! Two of Us is one of my absolute favorites. And I don't know if this will sound dumb but I do have to wonder-why is The Long And Winding Road disliked so much? I'm not a music critic, but I think it sounds just fine. Or is there a better version out there somewhere?

TLAWR is generally viewed as being too overproduced, slow, and sickly what with the Wall of Sound Spector put on it along with the female choir (not the first female voices on a beatle record tho as is sometimes said to be); George Martins work is said to be more understated, fitting and appropriate to The Beatles music.

The naked version on Anthology 3 (the let it be version stripped off all trace of Spector) is preferred by some, others like the version on Let It Be Naked which is the version in the promo and i think in Anthology (and not the naked version which is on Anthology – it can get confusing), many actually view Spectors mix as being wonderful, and the rest hate the song in every incarnation available and run screaming.

 (Let It Be Naked)

There are also a ton of alternate versions from the January '69 Get Back sessions.

gotcha! I think the one on the album is beautiful, but I can definitely tell the over-production of it now that I listen to these two versions. It all just depends on what you like in music I guess :D

I know people who like the Spector version of TLAWR because thats what The Beatles put out on Let It Be and its what they are used to.

My mom won't let anybody talk when it comes on when we listen to Let It Be. She's obsessed! It's the only one she's used to, like you said.

Paul has said that he intended "The Long And Winding Road" to be a sort of Ray Charles-style ballad.  Obviously, schmaltzing it up to the extent that it was contradicted this notion.  a-hard-days-night-paul-7

I personally think Paul's vocal on the Let It Be (and Anthology 3) version sounds a bit sickly in its own right.
