You all know you quote I’m talking about, right?

“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and told them they didn’t understand life.”

I Googled the quote but I couldn’t find a source and I was wondering, is there any proof that John Lennon actually said this?

He didn’t say it. The quote is made up, appeared on tumblr and then spread around Facebook.

For one thing, he didn’t have a relationship with Julia when he was five.

I told her I didn’t

That’s exactly why I thought it was fake. Thank you.

Actually, I’m not so sure. Lennon was moved to Mimi at the age of five (if I remember correctly), so the dates aren’t automatically wrong. Any other proof? Because the quote sounds perfectly Lennonesque to me.

As if it matters how a man falls down.'

'When the fall's all that's left, it matters a great deal.

*bump*

I tripped across this thread looking for something else. It doesn’t look like it got fully answered back then. Some folks were talking about this topic recently in another thread. I hope someone will write out the explanation here in this thread.

Got it/one – from hereGoogle search was the answer bringing these results.

And from that conversation here is one site that says its not a John quote.

I didn’t look for the thread last night. I was half asleep when I made that post. I just remembered that it had been discussed recently. I didn’t want someone using Google to trip across this thread and not find the truth. I brought up the issue hoping someone would pick up the torch. Thanks for doing so, mmm.

There’s a bit of discussion in the “Miscellaneous questions about John” thread, which I was skimming last night. (Was it updated recently? can’t remember)

GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

That quote has just obviously seemed fake to me. There are a lot of those going around on Facebook.

I’m pretty sure that this quote is fake.  I was seeing it online years before it started being attributed to John Lennon .

Anyway, I hope that it’s not real because it’s a very stupid thing to say.

It’s 100% fake…he never EVER said it and it’s never been found where he has said it anywhere, ever. It pisses me off to no end when I see people posting it with his picture all over the internet!

I wasn’t sure where to post this, so this thread is probably the best place.

Me too! My mom likes to tell the tale that I taught myself to read with Peanuts. I always picked Peanuts books for them to read to me and one time I just took over reading it myself, I was 4.

On topic: Would even a precocious 5 year old think to answer back “you don’t understand life”? John still could have said (as an adult) that he said it (as a 5yo) even if he was just making it up – but the fact that he didn’t say it has been established. Just adding another thought…
