Kind of neat bit of history, same with the story behind them.

It particularly amuses me that “sabotage” is listed as a reason for detention.

That was really a funny read!  “Silliness”, “Sabotage” and my fav “no interest whatsoever”.  Quite a piece of history!

I taught school for 5 years. He sounds like some of my nightmare students. Literally, the ones I had very bad dreams about and would wake up in a cold sweat.

However, I wonder if the school had had a “gifted and talented” program or the system had a charter school for “creative” students (like the school McCartney performed at in NYC) if John would have been a better, calmer student.

One-size-fits-all education does have it’s limitations.

Hi, Ahh Girl….regarding a gifted and talented program for John…if they had one…I think John hated school and authority so much that he wouldn’t have calmed down under any syle program. Also, he ws so immature and full of anger and uncontrolled emotions…I doubt any program could have helped him. He just couldn’t handle the whole academic experience.

That really fires the imagination, eh? To me, it evokes images of John blowing up a railroad bridge while twirling his moustache and cape.

It never ceases to amaze me how the most mundane things are worth so much because they belonged to/involved a Beatle.

Bwahahaha yes! Apparently John was thinking along the same lines:

So how did Brian hold so much sway over John, enough to get him stuffed into one of those matching Beatles suits? Is it because John picked Brian as an authority figure? He wasn’t someone randomly assigned by fate to be an authority figure. Or do I have this bit of Beatles history scrambled up somehow?

From what the other Beatles have said John was quite willing to put on the suits as the leather was old hat and nice crisp suits would get them listened to by stuffy executives who otherwise wouldn’t have listened to the first chord before saying “thanks, we’ll call you”. He later claimed it was a sign they had sold out but he knew fine well that to get anywhere they had to play the game to some level. Same as moving to London from Liverpool.

Aw, that’s sweet. He would do it out of love for his music and wanting to get out to the world. Thanks, JL. You rock!

I think the idea of John being forced to wear suits against his will is more to keep up this idea/myth of Rebel John standing up to all authority whilst soft Paul, already suited and booted, is next to Brian badgering John to put them on. I doubt John was delighted doing it but he wasn’t daft and going to reject getting to the Top over a suit.

Another one of Lennon’s detention sheets is going up for auction.

Auction house Sotheby’s said on Wednesday it would be offering a lined sheet, torn from a 1950s school notebook, listing the 15-year-old Lennon’s detentions for such transgressions as “impertinence” and “not wearing school cap”.

Sotheby’s said the sheet, listing 29 detentions imposed on Lennon between September 1955 and July 1956 at Quarry Bank High School in Liverpool, was rescued from a bonfire of old school records by an eagle-eyed member of staff in the 1970s.

On one day, September 12, 1955, Lennon received five detentions from two teachers for a range of offences from “no hwk” (homework) to “talk after two warnings” and “further talk”

While the school detention sheet does not record what impertinent things Lennon said to his teachers, it leaves no doubt that the future Beatle was a handful in the classroom.Other listed misbehaviour includes “silly conduct”, “groaning at me”, “foolish remarks”, “very late” and “nuisance in class”, mentioned four times.

The document will be on public exhibition at Sotheby’s in London from September 24 to 28 and will be offered for sale on September 29, with a price estimate of £2000 to £3000 ($4350 to $6500), as part of a “rock and pop” sale.

I was watching The One Show last night and Jimmy Tarbuck (a Liverpudlian comedian for those who don’t know) was a guest.

Jimmy went to school with John at Dovedale, and the sale of the detention sheet came up briefly.

Not exactly as he told it, but the gist was this…

Jimmy told this wonderful story about how John was always late, and the headmaster was a stickler for punctuality. John is attempting to sneak into school at about 9.20 one morning. He’s heading down the corridor to his class when he hears a voice behind him. “Lennon! What time is it? Do you know what this means?” John stopped, turned around and found himself facing the headmaster, and without skipping a beat said, “It means you’re late for your class, Sir!”
