Alissa, thanks so much for sharing this. It actually dove-tails into some things I've been thinking about my "relationship" with John over the years. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who makes these kinds of mental divisions/compartmentalizations.

I'm glad as well that someone is on the same boat! Is it a hinderance though? I'm not too sure; sometimes I think it is. Because I think of him in divisions, I often wonder, "do I even like the real him, then, if I loke ...

When I see at the photos on the biography by Philip Norman, the 40 years old John seems younger than the 20 years old. Odd.

Maybe he was happier without the Beatlemania on him. I've noticed that when people are happier, they look younger.

And about who's the authentic John.. I dunno... I always think of him that he was a musician and a composer and a singer. I think that's the real John... but isn't this a cliché answer?

I totally agree. The Sgt Pepper John was like a completely different person from the White Album John. I think whatever his look was, he was always authentic to some extent.

By the way, I also really like that picture Zig. I've actually never seen it before, but I see why Cynthia (and you) would like it.

A very interesting topic.

In perusing several books on the Four, I could not help notice the same thing about the many faces of John. We all have things that change about our faces as we age and/or go through weight changes. John seemed to go through various weight changes at various stages in his life making for some interesting photos.

The photo that I use for my avatar was chosen because Cynthia called it her favorite of all photos taken of John. I find it very hard to disagree.

Well, I always like to think of John as a mop-top even though he says it was all an act. But the way he acted, with his wit and such, reflected his writings in In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works, which he was always proud of I think. He was always a humorous person - humour was a major part of his personality - so his mop-top years probably weren't all just a charade.

The question I'm interested in (which hopefully doesn't take us too far a-field from the thread topic) is this: which "John" do you think was most fully the "authentic John"?

Oh, I know, people are multi-faceted and not at all one-dimensional. But I know John himself thought of those "mop-top ...

I can't help to notice, looking at some avatars we use, that John have some kind of chamaleonic face. What I mean is through the years, hair styles and even some face expressions, he seem to be not the same man. What do you think? do you agree? do I need to go to an ophthalmologist? or better go to a psychiatrist?
