I ordered Shoulda Been There by Jude Southerland Kessler on Monday. It is apparently a biography of John Lennon (what, did you expect someone else?) and is written as a third person novel. It’s the first of a five part series. You can read an excerpt here. It received rave reviews on Amazon and she spent 15+ years doing research, so it should be good. I hope. At worst, I’m stuck with $23 kindling.
Has any else read this book or even heard about it?

I'd heard of it, but there are too many other books I'd like to buy for me to bother with historical fiction about The Beatles. The third-person artistic licence annoys me a little – I don't really see the value in it. I'd rather read a straight biog.
I'm not sure why that is, as I enjoyed Backbeat, Nowhere Boy and The Hours And The Times – maybe fictionalised accounts just work better on screen than on the page. That extract certainly didn't entice me to read any more.

Offline Hmm. So I may have just bought a paper paper weight. To be honest, I haven't read a lot of bios. The other books I've purchased are interesting but they can read a bit like textbooks, so I thought this might be a nice change. We'll see.
So you would reccommend Backbeat?

Offline Backbeat is a brilliant film. Ian Hart who plays John Lennon does a fantastic job and i felt he captured who John was or what i thought John was like. Stephen Dorff does a good scouse accent but he was luckier because we didn't really have a perception of what Stu was like, but all of the cast were really good, no annoying portrayals as in other flims. It had great location work in Liverpool too, not just somewhere else pretending to be Liverpool. I'd highly recommend you get a copy of this film. Sorry to butt in your conversation by the way
I've just read the excerpt, i don't know. It's hard doing something like that because the author has got to catch the humour of the individuals without knowing them. Ray Coleman did that with his John Lennon books and i found they made out everthing John ssid was funny which got a bit irritating after a few chapters

Offline I think that's what I'm most worried about – that they'll be caricatures. She claims that she did the research, so the 'history' should be alright…

Offline I did like Backbeat, but I've heard a few people say it was a bit duff. Maybe that's the way they remember it – it came out around the grunge era, and a lot of the people I know who saw it were more interested in swooning over Stephen Dorff than enjoying The Beatles' story. If you're a Beatles fan you really should see it though.
I mentioned another film before, The Hours And The Times, which came out before Backbeat but also starred Ian Hart as Lennon. It's not often seen, but is a dramatisation of Lennon's Barcelona holiday with Brian Epstein. I've only seen it once, many years from now, but I'd love to see it again.

My thoughts too. I did do a bit of research into buying them once but if I recall, I hit the same brick wall as with other books; it was too expensive to buy and get shipped from the US

That's interesting. Haven't been to Liverpool for a few years. Last time was to go and see John's and Paul's homes which are now owned by the National Trust. Now that was a truly amazing experience.

Offline The book finally arrived in the mail and I'd call it addictive. I've read up to him reaching age seven. It starts with his birth (as good a place as any) and didn't have Mimi dodging Nazi bombs to visit her nephew; so far so factual.

Yeah that's kind of scary……..stopped being a Beatle at 30; dead at 40. His life was kind of split into quarters…….

Offline That's something I always find astonishing about The Beatles – that they did it all so young. George Harrison was 23 (23!) when he recorded Sgt Pepper , McCartney was only 27 when the Abbey Road medley was completed, and Lennon was 29 when he did the Primal Scream album and released Cold Turkey . There was some remarkable maturity on show.
I know musicians normally hit a creative peak in their 20s, but The Beatles packed so much in and split when they were still very young. No wonder they individually had quite a bit of trouble in the 70s, creatively or personally – there must have been a sense of not knowing where to go from the top, or trying to cope with a slower pace of life.
When I was younger I always saw Lennon as being quite old when he died at 40, but as I get closer (I'm 33 at the moment) I realise he really wasn't.
