There is nothing going wrong with the Forum. It is still a virtual community in which Beatles fans from all over the world can share information, thoughts, likes, dislikes and laughs.

If you’ve ever ventured outside the Forum and read some of the zillions of articles and features Joe has put together for us on this site, you would realize how much a labor of love this site is for him.  Think about how much work goes into something like this. Hours, days, weeks, months, years spent compiling information and writing it all up it in one convenient package. Occasionally, I am directed to other Beatles fan sites by an article or even a post on our Forum. Invariably, I am never quite as impressed by those sites as I am by this one. Many of you share this feeling as I have read many of your comments about how great this site is and how uniquely cool our Forum is – no headaches like those experienced elsewhere. I won’t go into what the headaches are as they are different for each person. Suffice it to say we have it pretty good compared to other Forums. All of that can be attributed to the efforts of Joe, the Mods and all of you who make meaningful contributions to the site and in particular, the Forum. How good do you think that makes Joe feel? How good would you feel?

The attributes I’ve outlined so far attract a lot of people to this site. Not everyone joins after being on our site just once. Browse through the “Introduce Yourself…” thread and see how many times someone has written that they’ve lurked for a bit before joining the Forum. That part makes me feel good too because it means that Joe, us Mods and you guys have made a great impression on others looking to join. How good do you think that makes Joe feel? How good would you feel?

On the opposite end of that spectrum is some of the behavior that drives away potential members. Incessant foolishness can be found all throughout the internet. It does not have to be found here. First and foremost, this is a Beatles site – not a gaming site, not Facebook, not a free-for-all-comers site that people can just take over and post anything they want. Those sites thrive elsewhere and I am sure they would welcome that type of content.

Joe has mentioned more than once that threads, games and all content in general need to be as Beatles-centric (cool term, eh?) as possible. He allows games to be played on his labor of love as long as the content focuses on The Beatles. This is meant to encourage people to learn more about The Beatles, be more interested in The Beatles and ultimately buy more Beatles merchandise on Amazon or iTunes through this site. That provides revenue to keep the servers on and the administrative costs paid which keeps the site going. He allows us to learn about, care about and check in on each other with threads like “In My Life …” and others. He allows many of us a very long leash in posting non-Beatles content. Frankly, he allows a lot of stuff that he really shouldn’t because he cares about people and is very liberal in his views. Those are just some of the attributes he has that make me admire and respect him a great deal.

A while ago, I created the “Impossible to Derail…” thread in order to capture all of the foolishness that I and others could not contain any longer. Years later, it seems dozens of offshoots of that thread have sprung up unnecessarily, making me deeply regret my creating that thread in the first place, thereby setting a precedent. It is getting to the point where that content is staring to dominate and Beatles discussions have taken a bit of a back seat. Whether you know it or not, this type of behavior keeps people from joining. This type of behavior also leads to people leaving the Forum or not feeling comfortable within. This means less Beatles fans buying less Beatles merchandise providing less revenue to keep the site going. To me, this is equivalent to pissing all over Joe’s labor of love. How do you think that makes him feel? How would you feel?

Let us please get back to Beatles discussions, Beatles-centric games and less foolishness. It’s OK to have some fun and go slightly off-topic once in a while – it happens. But some of the stuff that goes on does just that; it goes on and on and on. Please stop changing user names on a whim. Please stop plotting (real or otherwise) with or against anyone or anything for any reason. Please be more respectful. Ultimately, please stop the foolishness. Please do not be the reason why threads or entire sub-Forums get locked. Please stop driving people away. Please stop pissing on my friend’s website. It will not be tolerated. If it comes down to a choice between a few members who can’t abide by this versus the chance to attract and keep scores of new members, the decision will be an incredibly easy one to make. I implore you to take these words as they were intended. The Forum simply needs to be reined in, not radically altered.

In closing, I will paraphrase a bartender announcing closing time: “You don’t have to stop being childish, but you can’t do it here”.

Thanks, @Zig for that post. I have only been a member here for a short time, but what drew me to the forum was because I’d used Beatles Bible for any information I happened to need anyway. I figured it’s such a well researched and well put together site, it might be pretty decent being part of the forum as well. So I joined. And it’s been great though yes it can veer off topic and I agree with Zig’s thoughts there.

Joe, thank you for this site. The hours you put into research, fact checking, just everything. And giving us a place to discuss the Beatles together and meet some kindred spirits. It’s very much appreciated.

Thanks @Zig. That definitely needed to be said.

The forum has potential to be a great place, but has been overrun with a lot of childish discussions and comments. I’d love for people to me more mindful that this isn’t their personal playground, and that relentless off-topic chatter about nothing of consequence really does get very tiring for the others. People have openly spoken about this place becoming less enjoyable, which is absolutely not wanted.

@Starr Shine? @Little Piggy Dragonguy Please don’t threadcrap all over my forum. Please don’t rally others via PM to join you. Please don’t seize people’s usernames and cause trouble. I’m tolerant but not all that tolerant.

A rising tide lifts all ships. Let’s work together to make this place better.

Can I just say, as it may have been a post of mine in the “Derail” thread that started this, fun is definitely not objected to (after all, it’s one of the three things money can’t buy), but constant foolishness does become tiresome and uninspiring?

Revolution 9  is a fine excursion on the White Album , but an album of it is Two Virgins Two Virgins  wasn’t a great hit. Let’s be the White Album . Less nonsense, more Beatles!

If I may, the whole username thingy was only for fun, and it wasn’t done with the intention of stealing other usernames or whatever. And the whole thing was limited to the Derail thread, and it only got into the Pet Peeves thread because others started complaining about it there. I think, and I’m sure it was just meant for fun, and people should stop taking things so personally. The usernames were returned within an hour or two, and that’s all. If someone really had a problem, they should’ve been a bit more direct about it.

On that note, I really find addressing some issues in the Pet Peeves thread not very nice.

I sincerely don’t think anyone is trying to crap over the forum since most of the main threads are left untouched. And I think each and everyone of us here is guilty of letting things go off topic, and sometimes when it concerns The Beatles, those have led to some very interesting discussions as well. And when they really get off topic, people are there to remind us to stay on topic.

And I say all this with peace n luv, of course! heart

I think in general if people have a problem with something a users is doing, they should firstly PM the user so that it will disrupt the flow of the forum and if that doesn’t work or you are uncomfortable about PMing that user, PM a mod to help you.

It should only go on the forum if it is a big issue that features multiple users and has been long going.

Read Zig and Joe’s posts again, @Starr Shine? Both make it clear that it has been ongoing for a while, that it does involve multiple users (both those involved in doing it and those affected by it), that it is having an effect on membership, and is therefore a big issue.

I did read both, this is for the future when a behavior from a user is bothering someone. For them to PM first and soon before it becomes a big issue.

To stop things from becoming big issues, the should be headed off quickly and private like the name changing issue had a few members that were identified in Joes post could of been PMed and told to stop so that it would be over before more users hop on and make it a thing.

I shouldn’t have to be a childminder! People here (should) read the forum rules, have an idea of how Joe wants the forum to be used, and play nicely within the wide boundaries we’re given.

You could all set yourself a goal to maybe comment on two Beatles threads that you’ve never commented on before a week. Read through threads you’ve never gone near before and make your contribution. Don’t just log in and see there’s 57 new posts in the half-dozen threads you always look at, and stick to replying to those half-dozen threads.

Come on, Beatle People, I challenge you! Explore the Beatles parts of the forum, find forgotten threads, breath new life into them with your perspectives. You all have great opinions, start expressing them!

I really don’t know what I said that warranted this post. I’ve read the forum rules quite well, thank you.

I just said that the username thing was restricted to one thread and not to others, that’s all.

When I come online, I see hardly 15 unread topics and read them and if there’s something I can contribute, I do. And if I find the need to resurrect some threads, I do, if I have something to add or ask.

A discussion of changing usernames can be restricted to one thread, @O Boogie. However, littledarling, a change of username as has happened with many of you several times in the past few days affects EVERY thread. The only place the username doesn’t change is in quotes, which can make it difficult to keep track of just who is who.

Right. I’ve only changed my username once, and I informed it to Ahhh Girl, you can confirm with her if you want, and after I did, I even had my old username in my signature just in case people get confused. The option is there, why shouldn’t I use it? Or anyone for that matter. Haven’t you?

I didn’t get involved with stealing usernames, just for your information, and those who did just did it for fun and it didn’t go on for a long while. I saw it as fun, nothing else. I seriously didn’t like people talking about it in the Pet Peeves forum, and I still don’t.

Please understand this, LoveULikeGuitars, my first response was to the points you’d raised and not a criticism of you in any way. Just a disagreement with the arguments for the defence you were raising, and a general disagreement with them. They were not intended to be taken as personal criticism.

Well, you mentioned my login name in your post, what was I supposed to make of it? Anyway, yes, I understand it can be pretty confusing, but what I said was that it was only for a short time. People changed their names on St. Patrick’s day as well, I don’t see a lot of fuss made about it coz it was fun, and so was this.
