Phew. You may have noticed that the site was mostly offline for the past few hours. The move to the new server didn’t go precisely as planned, as there was a technical blue meanie lurking somewhere who proved exceptionally elusive. 
It should go without saying by now, but thanks for sticking with us. It seems like every month something new goes wrong, and I hope to get things back on track for 2014. The new server is fully managed with support staff who are supposed to monitor performance levels etc (though it took them a while to fix up the domain name transfer), so with a bit of luck there’ll be no more significant downtime.
That said, every time I’ve migrated the site in the past there have been a few minor hiccups, so if you spot something please let me know here. There might be a handful of comments or forum posts that got lost in the move, but hopefully nothing too important.
Also, now we’re on a fully managed server Pothi won’t be providing any more maintenance. He’s been incredibly patient and helpful over the past months, in the face of email after email asking “Why doesn’t my website work???” Thanks Pothi.

Offline Mine’s been off for 32 hours! Went down Sunday afternoon at around 1/2 1, came back at 1/2 9 tonight (Monday). Have had serious, serious withdrawal symptoms; going cold turkey is horrible.
Since its now back is that it over? Please say its so.

You might try the forum – toolbox – housekeeping admin form and reset the profile tabs and menus and see if that helps

Offline IJSAF – can you try again? I’ve reset that form and can now view my own profile. Hopefully yours will be OK now too.
Sorry for the lost messages during the migration. There’s always the danger that’ll happen. I did try to mitigate it by closing the forum for a time, but some must have slipped through the net.

Just a heads-up, I’ve added a caching plugin to the site to speed up some of the page load times. The forum should have been excluded so that everyone sees the most recent posts. However, if anyone spots something wrong (new comments not visible, something out of date etc) please let me know. There are a lot of settings to tinker with and I may have got something wrong.

Minor thing, but the “___ topics with unread posts” section isn’t updating immediately when I click on a new post. Sometimes minutes after I’ve read one of the latest posts, it’ll still show up as new.

Offline Thanks for the info Parlance. I’ve disabled caching for people when they’re logged in, which makes things a little slower but should mean you see the latest updates. Please let me know if it looks OK. I don’t have time right now to see if there’s a better way to tackle it, but I’ll take a look when I can.
trcanberra – the new server has twice the RAM of the old one, and hasn’t fallen victim to some of the tangled mess that afflicted the old one. So it should (fingers crossed) be a bit faster all round, even for those seeing uncached pages. The server is in Chicago. It’s quicker for me in the UK, and I’m glad it’s performing well Down Under too:)

Offline No idea if its been reported but when you click on “x topics with unread posts” its not refreshing with the new ones but instead brings up everything that was new when you first visited even if you have read them (if that makes sense). So for example if i read “Beatles News” and then click on “1 topic with unread posts” as someone has newly posted it won’t bring up the new thread but instead “Beatles News”. Refreshing the page or even leaving and coming back currently isn’t clearing it either.

Surely you want it working quickly. Why would you want it slow? Are you just used to that and a creature of old habits.
Considering the thought Joe had one night of removing the forum maybe we should all just say the place is fine for a while and then when he is on top of the world with birds singing everywhere he goes we hit him with a list 45 faults? Maybe if we all save up and put together a savings fund we can bribe him in keeping it up. Going 34 hours, or whatever it was, without access was not a nice experience. As sad as it may sound i really like it here and the net sucks without getting on.
