It'd be pretty funny if this thread got really interesting, with the OP nowhere in sight.

I bear the OP no ill-will.  There are Beatle forums out there which have much deeper dialogues on a far greater range of topics.  The guy probably expected a lot more than what this place has to offer.

But hey…  Every forum is different.

Hell…  It's 2013.  He should be amazed that these forums still exist at all.  These things are ghosts of the old internet.

Well, his posting history reveals him to be something like 40% serious poster and 60% silly troll, so…

I really enjoy this forum, I think it's a great mix of topics and people.  If I want to be a fangirl and talk about that type of stuff, there's a place for it.  If I want to chat about something more technical, there's a place for that too, and everything in between.

The only other message board I've used was a Beastie Boys one, and that was almost 14 years ago now.  People were not very welcoming or friendly.  ahdn_paul_01

Like Joe said to this troll, if you don't like a thread, you don't have to read it.  a-hard-days-night-john-3

Maybe there are too many ''who's the best looking'' type threads, but you don't have to go on them if you don't want to!

I can't stand trolls, who has got enough time to make an account and post such stupid comments like this?

Don't like it? You know where to go then, don't you?

I've moved this thread to Getting Better, as that's where it belongs.

For studio/technical discussions, I've found the Steve Hoffman forum pretty unbeatable. There are some frighteningly well informed people there. I don't post often but I do lurk occasionally, and it pops up in Google searches fairly regularly.

Thanks for the kinds words about the site. While it's nice that everyone closed ranks in support, I think the OP does raise a subject which is worth discussing. Obviously a forum's only as good as its members, but it is up to a site's owners to try to cultivate a space with character, avoid/encourage anarchy or hostility, and make it complement the rest (ie non forum part) of the site

When I set up this site I spent a lot of time researching and writing about Beatles songs and history, creating a site that I'd want to read myself. I thought it might follow that the forum continued in a similar theme, with some fairly serious debates and analysis. That hasn't always happened, and it's OK – I think I quite like the variety. But what I don't want is for people who want an in-depth discussion to be put off by all the "Who's got the best hair" type threads (that's not aimed at anyone in particular – just a general comment).

I'm not sure if there's a way to separate the serious/frivolous, or even if we'd want to. I like the idea that older/knowledgeable fans mingle with those just discovering The Beatles, and I am glad that the forum's not nearly as teenagery as it was a few years back when MrBig was trying to fight/fuck everyone. But it does feel that the tone of the forum is different from the comments on the main site, which tend to be more focused and informative (possibly because I simply don't publish the idiot ones).

Thoughts/suggestions welcome.

Joe, I think you've done an unparalleled job creating the main site.  The amount of information and cross-interactivity is perfect for both neophytes and hardcore fans alike.

Trying to "guide" a forum is like herding cats.  The subject matter appeals to such a wide swath of people, covering the full spectrum of ages and nationalities.  That fact alone makes a place like this prone to repetitious and simplistic threads.  I tend to avoid those for the most part, because not only am I among the older and more-knowledgeable group of fans, but I also tend to dislike Teen Beat-style lists and polls.

I've found that even the "smarter" or more thought-provoking threads tend to get dumbed-down fairly quickly, or just die out due to a lack of interest from the general population.

I guess we should just keep encouraging members to not be afraid to put forth more serious threads, and discouraging the simplistic and repetitious ones (which you've been good at culling as of late).  I would suggest pinning an announcement at the top of each sub-forum, asking members to use the "search" feature and to *bump* older threads to refresh a conversation instead of creating a new one. I know you've done that in a general sense, but sometimes people jump into a sub-forum right out of a Google search and skip the main page.

One practical suggestion would be to add a more "hard core" or "intense" forum right below the "Musicology and Recordings" one -- called something like Advanced Technical Topics for the Serious Beatlemaniacs (or OBD: Obsessive-Beatley Disorder blue-meanie).  Then the header could explain further, and administrators could keep out the fluff.

Thanks for the tip on the Steve Hoffman forum -- I'll see if anyone there can finally offer definitive proof on whether or not Paul played a kazoo on "You're Sixteen" on the Ringo solo album.

I'm a bit reluctant to create a hardcore Beatlemaniacs' section, as I'd like to have more of the in-depth stuff and fewer of the fluffy ones. Segregating it might mean the interesting discussions get kept out of other threads, and people get discouraged to participate.

To illustrate what I'm getting at, in the Songs section I'd initially hoped there'd be hugely in-depth discussions about what was recorded, similarities, threads, theories and themes. But they tend to be dominated by "Rank your favourite Rubber Soul songs"-type list threads, which become quite self-obsessed. Does anyone really pay attention to people's alternative White Album running orders? Are they of any use or interest to anyone other than the author? It's a tough call because they're quite popular, but my word they can clog up the forum.

I had considered hiving off top 10s etc into their own area, but I don't know if it's feasible. Who's to judge what's important or not? Maybe I should just go with what we've got – it seems to work well enough most of the time.

There are other, busier Beatle forums online with more technical topics.  Why not check out one of those?  Just type "Beatles Forum" into Google, and there they are.

But any forum is only as good as its members.  You're a member.  So simple logic dictates that if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

I see what you did there.a-hard-days-night-george-10

Probably not intentional, but I still laughed out loud when I saw it.

Steve Hoffman forums are a good resource.  I usually end up there when I want opinions on whether a remastered CD is actually better than the original one.  Although, most of the forum members end up saying, "Buy the vinyl."

Could you not throw all the ''best whatever'' threads and the ''ranking'' threads into one, so that there is one topic, for example, discussing who was the most attractive (tho it's mostly pictures on there, rather than a conversion about it), who had the best hair, etc. That way, people can say ''okay, let's now discuss who dressed the best'' like that, if they want to.

Don't know if I've explained myself properly there.

As for the quality of the site, there's a good mixture of serious threads and non-serious ones. I completely understand that the adults here aren't interested in talking/posting pics about above topics though. If there weren't threads about that kind of thing, then I wouldn't bother creating one, I'm not that bothered about it. Dunno if anyone else is particularly, either.

Most audiophiles are really stubborn, they would even do anything to persuade you to their cause. But in my case I'd choose Vinyl over CD any day.
