Maybe instead of the top ten list for all time, their could be a top ten for daily post count that changes every day so that everyone can get a chance to be on the top tens and it will show a more updated look at the forums activity.

I can see that becoming a competition and folk posting just to get to the top as much as possible.

A total daily/weekly post rate on the forum with how many folk have been on might be something.

That kinda happened with the Top Tens as they are. Though your right that it might be more likely to cause that issue since the results are more immediate.

So like a record of who’s been on overall today as a forum of showing activity. I’ve seen that happen on other forums. I think it is a good idea.

It is a nice idea, but unfortunately the stats section isn’t configurable.

I noticed that your “Song of the Day” pretty much goes through the Beatles catalog in alphabetical order.  That make it rather predictable.

It would be cool if you had some sort of randomizer so that the “Song of the Day” would be a surprise every day you visit site.

Since we are almost through the alphabet, it would make sense to start that after we finish all the Y songs.  There are no Z songs, right?

@Jolly Jimmy It does go through in alphabetical order, with a few exceptions. But I won’t be changing the order – it’s too much trouble.

For the tech-minded, it uses server-side includes to display a file based on the day of the year. I made 366 files, one for each day (including leap years), and put a bit of text, an image path and a link in each. So I added the songs in alphabetical order, but after 300 or so I ran out and has to repeat some of the more popular ones.

Today (9 October) is day 282, so it’s displaying a file called something like song_282.sssi. To randomise the order I’d have to edit 366 files and change the content in each (or change every file name). It’s not going to happen!

Incidentally, the album of the month works on a similar principle, but with 12 files. And the Did You Know? and I Want To Tell You snippets are also time controlled, though I think it uses the second in the minute to select the files to display (ie if you load the page on second #45 you’ll get a certain quotation or fact). I think that’s how it works. It’s a while since I set it all up!

I understand what you mean.  That would indeed be a hassle.

I know diddly squat about operating a website and am becoming less tech savvy every day since becoming unemployed.  I thought somebody did this manually every day and that it would be routine.

In my head, I was thinking of listing and numbering all the songs on an Excel spreadsheet.  If there were 366 songs, I would then use the Rand function on another cell to create formula of +366*RAND and format cell to be a whole number.  Whatever number you get, that is the Beatle song you choose as Song Of The Day.   The next day, you would delete that row and renumber the songs.  Then lower the number on RAND cell to 365.  Keep going until they are all used up.

The downside is you might get a song you just did a week or two ago, so…

Yep, Joe is the only one behind all the magic that goes on with this awesome site. He does what he can. I just wish (guess I need to head over to the wishing thread) I could win big in the lottery and give Joe enough money to be able to quit his day job so he could have the time to develop the site as much as he wants to. The world would be better for it.

I love the idea that somebody would get up early each day and change the song of the day. No, it’s all automated. Set and forget, as they say.

Also, I haven’t a clue how to use Excel. I’ve always found it mystifying, and have no desire to rectify that. I’m happy to mess around doing geek stuff on the web all day, but spreadsheets leave me cold.

I have to ask.  Now that are back to start of alphabet, I noticed that we are skipping over a lot of songs in our Song of the Day.  Is this natural or did you try and change something based on our postings above?

@Jolly Jimmy I haven’t changed it in years.

There are 302 articles on the Songs index. That’s a shortfall of 64 days (assuming a leap year of 366 days).

Broadly speaking, it goes through each of those 302 in alphabetical order (some might have been left out because they were later additions, or not worthy of homepage promotion). As I mentioned upthread, I then selected some of the more popular ones to fill up the year. If a song was a single, it was a key album track or had an interesting back story, chances are it got a second bite of the cherry.

Have the creators of BeatlesBible ever considered making an app of this website and forum?

Joe’s reply to the question as set by @longhairedlady (both from the 21st November 2014);

There are no plans for a Beatles Bible app. It’s been suggested before but I don’t want to do it. The reasons being: I’d have to pay someone to do it; I’d have to support multiple devices and multiple operating systems; it would require updating whenever those devices and OSs required it; I have a website which does what I want, and should render OK on mobile devices. I don’t think an app would be worth the investment, which I doubt I’d get back.

The only app I’d really like to do is one that could use location services to tell people which Beatles locations were near to them. But it would be such a headache trying to convert a web database system (WordPress) into an app and make it update automatically whenever the site gets changed.

There is a possibility of the forum integrating with the Tapatalk app, so people could post to and browse the forum from their mobile devices. I don’t think it’s possible yet (Tapatalk needs to change its API) but it’s something the Simple Press devs were considering. It wouldn’t be a Beatles Bible app, just a third-party one. Is there any interest for it?

Edit: Apparently Tapatalk aren’t even going to consider an integration until Q2 2015 at the earliest, so don’t hold your breath.

Quick question to all. I wrote an article on Behind That Locked Door earlier today. I publish new song articles every once in a while, as well as the occasional album feature. I’m gradually working through the solo years for Paul and George (I’ve done George; I might do Ringo’s albums but probably not the songs, sorry), but it takes a while.

Would it clog up the forum if I created threads for every new feature, or is it a good way of highlighting what’s new? I don’t want to annoy people by having too many. I guess some of them might be a bit obscure (all those album tracks!) but someone might appreciate the chance to have a discussion.

If there are enough in favour (or at least a muted opposition) I’ll go through the existing John, Paul and George articles and make threads for them. So if you always wanted an official, rubber-stamped discussion for Move Over Ms L or Mamunia, now’s your chance!

More threads created = more to discuss as it brings things to mind.

I say create a thread if you have something to say about the album.

Though I doubt it would be considered a nuisance though if no one has any thing to say about the topic then it isn’t useful at the moment.

I think it’s a good way to bring your new articles to everyone’s attention. I’m not in the habit of checking the main site for new features regularly, and I doubt my fellow Forumpudlians are either, but we certainly will notice it there’s a thread for Behind That Locked Door and then we will go and check the page out.

Right, I’m headed there now…
