100 pixels is fine – it’s not a quality issue here. Larger images should be rescaled (as your current one is, from 125px). I don’t want to have much larger ones than that because it would push the width of the forum further out. The most I’d be willing to go to is 125px.

The joe2 avatar here is around 500 pixels square, but resized automatically to 100×100. It’s about 150k in size. What’s the size (in kb) of the one you’re trying to upload? As I said before, if it’s over 500k you’ll have problems, as that’s the current file limit. It should be enough, though, for an avatar pic.

If it’s unrelated to file size I’ll see what else I can do.

Ah I see, well if it’s not restricted by width, their should be no problem. It’s 26.6 KB JPG picture I’m trying to upload. It still won’t work and I’ve tried other files and they won’t work either. It’s only working for files that have a width smaller than 100 pixels for some reason.

It seems OK to me. I just changed avatars without any problem, and this is an account with standard permissions (ie the same as yours).

It hit a blip when I tried to use the Update Profile button, as I hadn’t set a required field (location, on the Personal Identity tab). A pink warning popped up when I tried to save, but it was at the top of the screen and couldn’t be seen unless I scrolled up.

Could you try resaving an avatar, and when pressing the Update Profile button, scroll up and see if there’s an error? a-hard-days-night-ringo-8

I’ll be adding this info in time. I’d like to include instrument details on every song article.

I wouldn’t use Rock Band as a reliable source – there’s a lot of artistic licence in there. I’ve got some good sources (Everett, Andy Babiuk’s excellent Beatles Gear book, and this site: http://www.thecanteen.com/fabg…..tars.html), and I’ll try and pull together a proper list of what instruments were used and where. I’m not sure of the format – I’ll probably create a separate gear section, and divide it up into each band member, going through what they played chronologically.

Fortunately The Beatles used a fairly small range of instruments; certainly during the earlier years most of their recordings fewer than a dozen or so instruments.

MJB – thanks for the offer. Editing all the existing articles is what would take the most amount of time, and I can’t really get any help on that. However, if you or anyone else has definitive, reliable info on instruments used, please add them as comments to the song articles and I’ll update them.

Take out the bracket at the end, then it should work.

I tried again and on a couple of files it said “Sorry, file already exists!” which I don’t understand, then I tried with a different file and it said “Profile updated” and “Refresh page to display”. There was also a really long warning which didn’t make any sense to me and it faded out before I could read it. I refreshed the page like it said but nothing changed. In the avatar section of my profile options where it says current avatar, instead of a picture there’s a ? box. Perhaps its just my profile that’s screwed up, not the website.

I got McLerristarr’s avatar working OK, though I didn’t see any problems with it either. I just downloaded a random Beatles pic to my desktop, uploaded it via his avatar tab, resaved the profile and refreshed the page.

Can you check you’re trying to upload a jpg or a gif file (other file formats may be allowed, though I’m not sure which)? If you’re stuck again PM me your password and I’ll take a look.

Sorry you’re having issues with it a-hard-days-night-paul-4

Here’s what happened to me. I would try to upload a picture I liked, it would be rejected for whatever reason, I’d make changes, and try to reload it. It comes back saying that it’s already been uploaded, so I rename the file. It says it’s ok to update the profile and to refresh the page. I do that and I get the generic avatar as the result. So basically, once it’s rejected the picture, you just have to find a new picture.

Thanks for that. So it sounds like it just needs the file to be renamed, eg mypic1.jpg rather than mypic.jpg.

Now I need to work out why this forum’s doing odd font size formatting around quotes. It’s annoying me.

Another thing I’ve noticed…….  When I post, the count updates alongside my image immediately BUT not at the bottom right.

That’s probably because it’d have to compile data from a number of sources. For very busy forums getting hundreds of posts it’d cause a big server strain, so it makes more sense to update the overall post count at regular intervals – say once an hour, or twice a day, or even daily.

I’m not sure I have any control over this, but I think it can stay as it is. I’d not noticed it though – thanks for pointing it out.

OK, I’m getting there. Thanks for your patience all.

I’ve been looking into the quotes thing. I’m not sure how much I can stop it, as it seems to be a quirk of WordPress (often wonderful blogging software, but sometimes infuriating with it too). Certain things seem to get formatted, or miss out having tags wrapped around them, leading to font sizes occasionally being the wrong size. Editing the messages after publication doesn’t even seem to fix them, as certain things get forced into bad formats.

I think the old editor, called TinyMCE (a kind of visual editor), made it easy for bad stuff to get through. I’ve changed it to have BBCode as the default editor, which might mean a bit of adjustment to use, but hopefully should be better in the long run.

If you don’t like BBCode you can choose to go back to TinyMCE, or have HTML or even plain text as your default editor. Just edit your profile, like you would if you wanted to pick a new avatar, and change it there under Personal Options. If you haven’t selected one already it’ll be the new default, BBCode.
That’s all a bit jargony, so sorry if it means nothing. Please let me know if you think it’s not working, or could be improved, and I’ll cry inwardly before wondering what to do about it https://www.beatlesbible.com/wp/wp-content/forum-smileys/ahdn_george_05.gif

Why have things gone ultra-tiny on the main forum page again?

Should be better now. The text size was set to 85%, but I’ve increased it to 100. I really need to look at every aspect of the design and see if I can fix it – there’s a lot of odd things having an impact on each other.
