I got the toolbar back when i found out that IE stupidly removed it in compatibility view so deselected that function, however i now use FF for this site anyway (IE is a pain with it).

Perhaps, but on the unofficial James Taylor fan site, one of the members has taken on the gigantic project of providing chords for all JT songs, and he’s almost done.  He posts links to his list every time he has a new one.  He’s been doing this for some five years, and so far, no copyright problem, apparently.

It’s not gonna happen. I really don’t want lawyers acting for Apple to shut me down. James Taylor’s people might be happy for tabs and chords to be posted online, but that doesn’t mean every management company is the same.

In an ideal world I’d love to post lyrics and tabs for everything, but I can’t. The only lyrics on the site are for cover versions, apart from the snippets on the homepage.

Wow – I’m away from the site for 11 days and the whole thing is different. Looks great Joe!!

Cant you just put up the lyrics on a site as they are all over the net anyway (tho most have them wrong)?

If it is wrong and naughty then it will be fun getting a note from Apple, EMI and the individual foursome saying “you can’t do that”. I’ll try and bargain by agreeing only if i can meet Sean. Paul, Dhani and Ringo for a Jam.

If it’s all the same with you I won’t risk being sued, whether it’s “fun” or otherwise.

It just occurred to me how very odd is the idea of making the chords of one’s song off limits to the public without charging them or threatening them with lawsuits.

Wouldn’t that be sort of like not allowing people to use a certain type of clay and cement, just because a famous sculptor used those for his statues?

Since when are chords, or their particular sequence, the peculiar legal property of the musicians who write songs employing those chords?

It almost sounds supernatural to me.

Now if the Beatles, or any of the other various “rebellious” folk/pop/rock stars of the decades, want to actually try to charge people money for the chords of their songs, or even legally punish them — then at least have the decency to admit that you’re a fucking Capitalist fascist just like, exactly like, all the bogeymen your songs decried and your 60s counter-culture so self-righteously pilloried.

As I understand it, it’s to do with the sequences of chords, and the melodies that might be associated with them. When plagiarism cases go to court it normally involves musicologists determining whether certain things are notably similar to other pieces of work.

IIRC there’s a McCartney quote where he says something like “We didn’t think you could actually own a song – we thought they just lived in the air.” That’s why you have music publishing.

Anyway,

Have got the laptop back (hurray), using IE and this site is working fully, all the buttons are properly displayed and everything. Is this something that has been resolved or a weird anomaly in the strange world that is Internet Explorer?a-hard-days-night-ringo-7

Even have working smileys.a-hard-days-night-john-1

Haven’t a clue! I only have IE8 and the buttons are missing text. Possibly later versions are better. Glad it’s working for you though.

Mith, pressing the ‘escape’ key (esc) closes the pic without having to reload the page.

Quick update. There was a new version of the forum software, and that seems to have partially fixed the IE buttons. Now the wording is there, just outside the buttons. It’s not ideal but it’s a step in the right direction. I won’t bother trying to fix it – if you have to use IE I think you’ll have to live with it (and if you don’t HAVE to use IE, get a better browser!).

The upgrade has probably broken some other stuff – that’s normally what seems to happen. Hopefully nothing major.

When I’m trying to search for things, it won’t come up because some of the words are less than 4 characters (e.g. searching for the song I Need You will only search for Need). Is it possible for this to be changed, or is there a way for someone to search without this happening that I didn’t know about? Or is it just something I’ll have to deal with?

Have you tried searching for “I need you” in quotation marks? That’s normally the best way to search for common words/phrases (not just on this site).

FYI, I was trying to update my preferences at Edit Global Options, but none of the checkboxes enabling me to make changes are visible.

BTW, the checkbox issue seems to be the same one affecting the poll here.

Hmm. I had no idea this was an issue, but I suspect it was broken when I did the redesign. I can’t find the immediate problem, but give me a day or two and I’ll take a closer look. Looks like there’s some styling info missing.

Right. I think it’s fixed now. Thanks for letting me know – it was a badly coded file path in the forum plugin (not my fault for once!).

It’s possible that it’ll happen again if an update to the forum software is rolled out, unless the devs spot it. If you see the buttons missing again, please post here.

For my reference (ignore this if you’re not me, which you aren’t): /wp-content/sp-resources/forum-cache/sp-plugin-styles-all.css – find /wp/wp/ and replace with /wp/

Also, same file, font colour (to make the text and other greys darker): change color:#777 to color:#333
