Wiki article:

On 30 December 1999, 36-year-old Michael Abram broke into the Harrisons’ Friar Park home and attacked Harrison with a kitchen knife, puncturing a lung and causing head injuries before Olivia Harrison incapacitated the assailant by striking him repeatedly with a poker and a lamp. Following the attack, Harrison was hospitalized with more than forty stab wounds. He released a statement soon after regarding his assailant: “[he] wasn’t a burglar, and he certainly wasn’t auditioning for the Traveling Wilburys.”

I agree that Harrison was just more private and not reclusive.  Add in that, as he became more spiritual, his ‘circle’ didn’t mirror that of his band mates or make him much of a media darling.

Being a loner does not mean you don’t need people in your like. Not all of us are social butterflies and have to have people surrounding us all the time. I am kind of a loner and am very happy with my wife, children and a few close friends. I don’t need to be the center of attraction. I like my time to myself.

Right. There is a difference between a “loner” and a “leave me aloner”. I always got the sense that George loved to be left alone in general, but still enjoyed a wealth of close friends. One look at all of the folk on stage during Concert For George or a viewing of Living In The Material World proves my point. The man was by no means a loner.
