George did join the band in February 1958 about six months after McCartney hooked up with Lennon. I love the part in the Harrison documentary were McCartney say's that him and Lennon were not very good guitar players and needed a great lead guitar player and so brought in Harrison. That should put to rest all the fans who have said that McCartney was a better guitarist then Harrison.
