Speaking of songs that don't sound like George, I know it's him, but I don't hear it. It's like he left his accent at home.

Not George? Certainly not a fab, if that's what you're asking. It sounds almost American to my ears.

I hear it as his best rock vocal

Not George, or related, but still awesome:

It had been a while since I listened to this one as a whole. On my way out the door yesterday, I grabbed it and played it on my way to work…and again today. Man, what a great album! Can’t get enough of it.

Easily his second-best album (after All Things Must Pass ), and considering The Traveling Wilburys Volume I came straight off of the back of it, easily George’s most satisfying period of work since the early ’70s. Love the album.

Of the George albums I own (not nearly enough), this is my second favorite, behind of course ATMP .

Agreed. ‘Devil’s Radio’ would fit quite nicely on TTWV1. I am also fond of one of the bonus tracks (hint: it’s not ‘Shanghai Surprise’)

The lyrics to ‘Shanghai Surprise’ are so bizarre i’m not sure if they are really good or really bad. What the hell is “I’d like to trust you but I’ve broken my rickshaw” or “Getting hot for me like tofu when it deep fries” – who writes stuff like that (aside from George obviouslya-hard-days-night-george-4)?

As for Cloud Nine its a wonderful album, one of the very best solo Beatles albums. ‘Fish On The Sand’ being one of my faves out of everything any Beatle put on record after the split but the rest is so good (aside from ‘Got My Mind Set On You’, never been a huge fan of that).

Great album. I know some fans feel Jeff Lyne over produced it and made it sound a lot like ELO but a fantastic album all the same. My favorite is ‘If That’s What It Takes’.

As I said in a different post recently, ‘ATMP ‘ and ‘CN’ always get the most favorable reviews but I also like ‘George Harrison ‘ and ‘Thirty-Three 1/3’ a lot also. His songs generally always have a spiritual message attached though sometimes he does have some fun with a few song’s lyrics. That George Harrison sense of humor. Check out the lyrics to ‘Cockamamie Business’. He definitely was not a big fan of the music business.

This is probably the one Jeff Lyne project that doesn’t bother me, like he was restrained in his production so it didn’t become the same as everything else he’s ever done. ‘Poor Little Girl’ tho reminded me first of ‘Every Little Thing ‘ then ‘You Got It’ then then later sounded like most of Lyne’s work on ‘Brainwasheda-hard-days-night-paul-3.

Cheer Down is another from this period that is up amongst the best stuff George ever did.

The line “didn’t want to be a star – wanted just to play guitar” from ‘Cockamamie Business’ very neatly sums up George. Another song i love of his and deserved more than just being one of the new tracks on his ‘Best of Dark Horse ‘ collection.

Add me to the list of those who consider this his second best album after ATMP … even in spite of “Got My Mind.”  ahdn_george_05
