OfflineI found an interesting topic on George vs. Paul on bass and wanted to add a reply, but found it was "locked".
Why on earth would a forum lock a topic? That kind of discourages new members.
I can see why a Politics forum would lock a topic, if it gets too heated or trolls start posting -- but a music forum???

OfflineI dont remember much about that thread except for arguements.
I think at times on the site (and anywhere else in life and online) discussions can get a little heated due to differing opinions. Topics may therefore be locked because the thread resorts to getting nowhere but going over the same things again and again whilst getting pretty rowdy and at times unpleasant. 99.8% of the time however its a very peaceful, enjoyable place to be with a desire held by all for politeness and respect regardless of views held. I know for a fact the mods and administrator would never lock a thread without good reason and only as a last resort.
There is one topic (which shall remain nameless) that sends shivers down my spine at the mere thought of ever seeing it starting up again. I thought about getting counselling the last time.
Welcome to the site by the way. Hopefully you will stick around and post elsewhere.

The topic is something of a joke around here, and gets alluded to in other threads occasionally.

Thanks Von Bontee, and thanks for the link. (I just re-listened to "A Day in the Life" and it seems clear to my ears that all the "Ahhhs" are John's. If it is Paul, he's doing as good an impersonation of John as Kevin Spacey does of Johnny Carson
…)
I haven't read through that topic thread yet, but my curiosity will probably get the better of me!

Well, I just read the first page of it -- then I noticed there are FIFTEEN PAGES!!! No way, I'm reading all that about that one tangent. (What should irk those who feel passionately about it all the more is that there is one person who can settle the question once and for all, still alive!

Just when I thought you were on MY side…![]()
You don't need to go through all the pages, I explain all you need to know on page one, everything else is more or less redundant. ![]()
I know someone who asked about that on Paul's Facebook site but never got a reply.
Maybe someone should try on twitter??
Another user tried that with George Martin.

paulsbass,
The argument you articulate on page one is structurally sound, but it's not definitive. Without the actual proof from McCartney or Martin, this debate resembles innumerable political or theological debates where both sides seem to be arguably possibly right, in a close but no cigar kind of way. At any rate, the crux of your argument I think is the "chest" singing of Paul, which I agree he has; I just don't hear it sufficiently in any part of those "Ahhhs". Voice amplification and close proximity to the mic also helps -- indeed,John's voice in most of his lines has a degree of depth and power that sounds artificially amplified to my ears. There's something else about the difference between John and Paul's voices: John even when young had a kind of "old man" quality to his voice, which Paul never had -- and I hear that "old man" in those "Ahhhhs" right from the initial point all the way through to when they fade.

That's funny, since Paul does all the Aaahs with his chest voice throughout (btw, EVERYONE has a chest voice). In contrast, check out the backing vocals, where we can hear John doing some high "Uuuhs" with his head voice.
Since you mention the moment when they fade, at the very last moment his voice kind of breaks in a way only a chest voice can. You hear that best in the "vocals only" mix mentioned in the thread.

Well, obviously Paul DID have that quality…
At the end of the thread I mentioned the Olympics, where ADITL was played – and it sounded SOOOO clearly like Paul that I thought "Finally, NOW they will come around!"
Seems I was wrong…
THIS is the sort of reason why a topic might get locked. Someone asks a valid question, then it careers off into a vortex of irrelevance.
Please, I'm begging you, don't turn this thread into another "Who did the bloody Aaahs in ADITL". I don't think I could cope! There's already a thread for that.

Can you provide a link to the thread in question? Probably it descended into petty bickering or got hopelessly off-topic with no way to revive it. Maybe I was having a bad day.
As for the general principle of locking topics, I generally prefer light-touch moderation and try to steer people in the right direction rather than stopping them from doing stuff. Sometimes, though, I get a bit fed up when people are stupid and might decide to close the discussion. It happens very rarely though. We're all human – nobody's perfect.

Well, obviously there will always be newcomers, and if they don't care to go through the thread and read everything that has been said they will want to discuss the matter again and again…
I admit this is not on topic, but the original question had been answered already (also thanks to my contribution, as I might add!

OfflineIf new folks want to discuss ADITL provide the links to the 2 threads on it (the first one was eventually locked) & let them read the first few pages. That'll put a stop to their curiosity for all time.

OK, thanks. I think my reason in the final post on that thread still stands. IIRC there were quite a few threads like that at the time, which ended up as stupid slanging matches involving people who didn't know when to walk away. It was ruining the forum. I'm always grateful when people contribute to this site to make it better, but nobody would bother if it was full of bickering and arguing, especially if those arguments have nothing to do with The Beatles.
I haven't re-read all of that thread, but if you want to start another on that topic go right ahead.

It was a ridiculous thread from the beginning and not even a real topic, so the hell I will do, rest assured!
That invitation was really aimed at Funny Paper – see his/her original post.
