ahdn_paul_06 I think that when your account is deleted, Your posts become guest posts so they will still be there. Since some of the early threads have guest posts. So even if his account is deleted, the mods will still have to search for his posts. It would be easier to delete the posts first then delete the account.

Edit: If a post is moved, then the next poster will own the thread. It’s happens to me before so I am sure that is what will happen with a deleted post.

Thats a point @Starr Shine?.

A search found this posted by Joe here.

I think if an account gets deleted all posts show up as by a guest. It’s another weird anomaly of the forum. That’s how it used to be anyway – I haven’t deleted anyone for a few years.

IveJustSeenAFaceo said

Anyway we could use the same thing for deleting as is in place for editing, where you can only delete before someone responds? I’ve made posts that I immediately regretted, so if I could still delete those, but not ones that had been replied to, that’d be good.

———————————————————————————————–

Just edit it to say something like “Posted in error – mods please delete” and we’ll do so.

The options I have are (relevant ones in bold):

Editing

  • Can edit own topic titles
  • Can edit any topic title
  • Can edit own posts forever
  • Can edit own posts until there has been a reply
  • Can edit any post

Deleting

  • Can delete topics in forum
  • Can delete own posts
  • Can delete any post

The only one enabled was “Can edit own posts until there has been a reply”. However, I’ve just changed it so people can continue to edit their posts. If individual people start causing problems I’ll restrict their access on an individual basis. Hope that’s OK with everyone.

So i was wrong. you learn as you go.

But even if its separate it has to go thru Joe first, mods will follow Joe’s lead and instructions.

@TheBeatlesJohn My understanding is that, if your account is deleted, your posts will show up as guest posts, and your former identity will disappear.

Myself, I cannot see Joe agreeing to the removal of every post that mentions your former identity, as that would involve removing posts not written by you. That would be incredibly unfair on those who have made those posts.

That said, mods are always able to edit posts and replace mentions of your earlier name with a replacement name. @Joe may even, and I’m not saying he can, be able to edit your sign-up identity with the use of admin tools.

Knowing who you are, I for one would be sorry to see you go, but understand you must have your reasons for wanting to sever from the name you signed up with. @Ahhh Girl, site detective and sleuth, should be able to find all mentions of your original name and any photos you want removed and be able to deal with those.

Give Joe and the mods a chance to work out if there is another way through this that keeps you with us.

Thank you, I actually read that post a while back but forgot I did, however if I DID log out and just disappear, my old name would still show up if you typed it in, (which I use for a lot of things) and I’d rather people weren’t aware of my obsession with The Beatles(only a small part of the reason I’m going, not the main one) and if there were a way of the forum not coming up with my old name and rather my new name on the first page of Google, I’d take that instead, but that’s not the case unfortunately :/

Sorry to be coming late to this discussion. I’ve been in 3 meetings today. I did do one thing on the sly during one of the meetings, but I couldn’t handle doing two things on the sly. So, I am just now getting around to reading this conversation.

Does anyone understand the part of the conversation I quoted in this post? “…would still show up if you typed it in… typed it in where? As an @? And as for “coming up on the first page of Google” is that meaning it shows up if you type his original username in as a Google search?

I will await Joe’s ruling on this. I can go back and find where the original name is used. However, even if we alter the posts, the originals may be out there on the web in the Internet Archive. I don’t think that can be altered, but maybe I am wrong.?.? @Starr Shine? or @parlance help me out here if you can. Is the stored stuff searchable? I’m having a brain freeze here.

Certainly the @ mentioning tool displays your original username if you hover over a preview of the post, never given the google search results much thought @Ahhh Girl. No idea about the rest.

Would be fascinating if the archive system retains posts that otherwise were deleted.

The caches at search engines would update. But any earlier posts on the Wayback Machine could have been archived and would remain. The snapshots it takes of web pages would be the most recent, but someone could still go into the calendar to view earlier versions. Hope that makes sense.

Way back might have some of his posts archived if he posed in the derail thread then his other name will be there. I am pretty sure with way back you have to know the url in order to get the site. You can’t Google to get a way back archived site.

I wonder if his account is deleted, Will his posts go back to his original display name or would they keep the latest display name?

I’m in contact via email with @TheBeatlesJohn and will try to work out a mutually agreeable outcome.

@Ron Nasty is right. I can delete an account, but I have two choices: a) change all posts to be Guest-authored, or b) delete all posts by that user. But that doesn’t deal with other people’s mentions of that person, quotes of their posts etc. It’s a headache whichever way you slice it. Also, if I chose option b) it would leave disjointed half-conversations which didn’t make sense, as we saw when @paulsbass culled all his posts. That’s the reason why I stopped allowing people to do it.

There’s also a concern that Google is showing the old username in results pages, but that will change in a week or so when they update their index. You could also ask Google for a name to be excluded should you wish, because their index has nothing to do with me. I can edit all third-party posts here that mention the old username, which I’d be willing to do although it would be hugely time-consuming.

On the wider question of whether someone should have the right to delete their account, I’m undecided. I can understand why a big company like Facebook would need a policy on it, because an account can become a liability which might affect people’s wider lives, but this is just a Beatles forum on which most people use assumed identities. As far as I know there’s no legal right supporting people’s demands to be forgotten – it’s a matter for site owners, and AFAIK Google’s recent right-to-be-forgotten ruling only applies to them.

I’ve purposefully minimised the rules and legal terms when people sign up, but from my perspective whatever people post here gives me (as site owner) non-exclusive rights to whatever gets posted. Non-exclusive means whoever wrote it still retains the copyright, but gives me an ongoing licence to publish/host it here. I’m not interested in reproducing or repurposing anything; you’re safe from exploitation. Perhaps I should clarify this in the forum rules section. I don’t know; I’m not a lawyer. I’d have thought it was common sense that if you post something on a forum, you grant the forum owner(s) an implicit right to continue publishing that content. But I also acknowledge that we’re (mostly) human beings who want to be happy, and I try to help people whenever I can unless it’s an unreasonable or difficult request.

@Joe, if going through and changing his name in individual posts is the best option, I am here to help you out.

I think all is done now, although Google’s index will take a while to reflect the changes. If anyone spots anything I’ve missed please PM or email me.

I think you’re overreacting. You’re new to online forums so it’s perfectly natural to screw up a couple of times before you get the hang of it, some worse than others. Expecting yourself to understand proper netiquette in a month is like expecting a student to get an A on every single test. Sometimes, you’re going to get B’s, C’s, D’s or even F’s and that’s okay because you’re learning and we’re more than happy to let you stumble your way through the forum like i and everyone else here have.
