Joe Johnson (Beatle Brunch, 06.10.2012) mentioned that the single “Magical Mystery Tour ” reached the US Billboard Charts, somewhere in the 100’s. I have never heard of “MMT” being a single except for a Capitol/Cema Juke-box 45rpm in yellow vinyl, released in 1987. What gives? No one lists “MMT” as ever being a 45, on Capitol, in the 60’s.’

Offline Presumably you mean just the song considering this is in the song sub-forum.
Never been a huge fan of it, does a job and thats about it – the “mystery trip” middle bit and the end closer with the piano or keyboards tinkling away is nice tho. I do also like the film version with John’s “when a man buys a ticket. . .” spoken part, i kind of wish that was on the album. The trumpets are the most annoying for me, too sharp (for lack of a correct word).

Offline Not a bad song, not a great song either. Gets a bit annoying if you hear it too much. Like the middle bit and the ending though, like mmm said.
As for the album, it’s great, one of my favourites actually.

My favourite thing about the song is Ringo’s backbeats and Paul’s driving bassline during the verses. And the way it goes all dreamy during the bridge, and the outro. Not a great song, perhaps, but it sure sounds nice. Or at least is full of nice sounds.

Offline I think i prefer the film mix with John’s calls instead of Pauls – especially during the solo. Its still not a great song, catchy but slight. In fact you could say that about all of Paul’s latter ’67 material aside from ‘The Fool On The Hill ‘ – not there is much thinking about it.

Only the post-Pepper thru to end of 1967 (excluding ‘The Fool On The Hill ‘) and its not that i dont like it (tho i can happily go years without having to hear ‘Your Mother Should Know ‘) there is just nothing to it. Ringo and the backing vocals save ‘Hello, Goodbye ‘ from complete boredom, the already mentioned ‘Your Mother Should Know ‘ somehow achieves the distinction of being a short song (not even 2 1/2 minutes long) yet overstays its welcome by at least 60 seconds, ‘MMT’ is catchy yet dull and ‘All Together Now ‘ is a fun kids song but spend 30 seconds looking into it and you’ve wasted 25.
I can’t think of any others of Paul’s from that period. I’d argue (and have stated before) that i dont think his ‘Pepper’ stuff is that great when you take them away from the album context – George and John’s offerings are far superior.
‘Lady Madonna ‘ shows that he got some oomph back.

Funny, I absolutely love his ’67 stuff like Hello Goodbye , Penny Lane and some of his work on Pepper, (which I agree is a bit overrated).
But I think ’67 is John Lennon ‘s most prolific year with great songs like Strawberry Fields Forever , Baby You’re A Rich Man , I Am The Walrus , A Day In The Life , Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds , Good Morning Good Morning , Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite !, etc……
Overall, I find 1967 their best year, followed by the White Album in ’68

It’s just got a lovely melody, some great lyrics and genius musicianship. I admire it even more after watching that Sgt Pepper documentary this summer.

I always laugh at (and feel sorrow for) George during the promo film… He has a “someone remind me what the hell I’m doing here?” kinda aura about him… It’s not just the way that he’s lackadaisically airbanding it but doesn’t appear too crazy ’bout donning the Sgt. Pepper suit either… I feel that this view of ‘Hello, Goodbye ‘ you’ve expressed here could also be said about the ‘Magical Mystery Tour ‘ track as well… Paul was late to the party as the dentist experiment was in full bloom and it shows… I always felt that he became more of a follower than a leader here…
If you take away the overdubs of a lot of his ’67 material, there’s not much of a song left there really… With ‘Yesterday ‘, he took a great song of his and applied some colour and texture with orchestration for added effect… It seems to me that he was often thinking ahead to the recording sessions here without giving the writing its due process, in my opinion… ‘Magical Mystery Tour ‘, as with the film itself, was like a painting where the artist used too much colour and things got messy… The painter kept applying colour to hide the fact that there wasn’t much of a painting there to begin with…:-)

Offline Hello, Goodbye is one of my favorite Beatles songs. One can parse & analyze one’s favorites (or duds) till the cows come home, but at the end of the day, it’s like trying to convince someone why coconut ice cream is better than strawberry ice cream (or vice versa)…

Offline I have a questiom about how the somg was recorded, mainly Paul’s vocals. From what you guys can tell, are Paul’s “The Magical Mystery Tour is….” vocals on the same track as his main chorus vocals? Doing a cover of this song, and I’m trying to make sure it sounds right.
