Anyone ever notice how different the Past Master’s version vocal track sounds? This is the version that is the single correct? Funny on the radio I never notice, but at home comparing this to the album, man the vocal sounds a lot different. The whole track does.
Tell me if these observation are correct so far? The single version has less overdubs, the organ is louder and the brass not so loud? The older solo with the leslie speaker is used? Did Martin produce it at all, or just Glyn Jones? The Past Masters version seems a bit more live or lively.
I am a huge fan of the guitar solo on the album version… but aside from that not sure which version I like better.

Offline There are lots of variations in the versions of Let it Be, the easiest way to distinguish most of them is by the guitar solos.

Offline I know that. I just was really just appreciating the differences over all, for the sake of seeing what I like or don’t. And in this case I was particularly strongly noticing how different the vocals sounded. I can tell them apart easy enough. I just like analyzing how different they are.

Offline Contrary to exarctly, I far prefer the guitar solo on the single.
Of course, the original plan from what I recall is that both solos were supposed to appear simultaneously. The album version was to be the background solo behind the “single” solo.
Someone should easily be able to mash that up.

Offline Well, to each his own… but FWIW (not that it proves anything, as a majority could be wrong) but if you read the comments in the Let It Be song section of this page, I get a good amount of support of people who say the album solo is better. One comment mentions that the solo is part of what emotionally attaches them to that version of the song. And another person actually remixed the two together so that they could hear the solo from the album in the mix of the single (with a couple other changes too). And one poster thought it was too good to actually have been played by George (though they are rightfully disagreed with). I just think that album solo has a ton of grit (great fuzzy tone) and great construction of ideas. Not to mention George probably likes it better because he did decide to redo it after all, and probably was able to take a more concentrated effort on it.

Offline I’m listening to Breakfast with the Beatles, and in the first 15 minutes, they played a jokey country-sounding version that Chris Carter says Paul did of “Let It Be ” during soundcheck in 1993. His bandmembers in the back are yelling “Oi!” and it’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard in my life.
Anyone else heard of it?

Ditto. The solo on the album does not really flow with the song and is too distorted and loud and contrasts with the song too much, IMHO.

Offline I’ve said elsewhere that I’m a single solo guy too. The album version is nice and grungy but gets disjointed at the end for me. I will say though that the single solo could easily have been played on a Leslie organ. Other reasons for liking the single version, it’s the least insulting Spectorization of all the major songs and fits its churchy nature. Who actually played the bass on it? The single version is John. Wikipedia is confusing and misleading on the subject (as it is for take 25 of the song).

Offline John’s bass was wiped and replaced by a new bass part by Paul which is on the single, album and 2003 re-whateverthehellyouwanttocallit versions. You can hear John’s original bass part on the raw nagra tape recorded on the 31st January 1969 (DDSI #: 31.64).
Edit: some bright spark had the idea of both guitar solos (abum and single that is) playing at the same time.
